I don't understand how our talent is top 20 in the nation when we lost over 30 players to the portal last year. Not sure if I am buying this and I think our staff out performed the talent we actually had to work with this season. Personally I think Heupel actually did the most out of any coach with how little he had.

Yea I think he did a good job, but Tennessee still had some talent.

Offense
Darnell Wright - 5-star (99.4)
Cade Mays - 5-star (98.7)
Jerome Cavin - 4-star (89.0)
Hendon Hooker - 4-star (89.0)
Tiyon Evans - 4-star (89.2)
Jalin Hyatt - 4-star (92.2)
Ramel Keyton - 4-star (95.0)

Defense
Brandon Turnage - 4-star (95.5)
Alontae Taylor - 4-star (94.7)
Jaylen McCollough - 4-star (93.3)
Caleb Tremblay - 4-star (89.7)

So, it's not like you had a Sun Belt roster or something. Tennessee probably had one of the top 3-4 offensive lines, talent wise from recruiting, in the SEC. That's a pretty good place to start.

They beat the following teams
- Bowling Green (more talented)
- Tennessee Tech (more talented)
- Missouri (more talented)
- South Carolina (more talented)
- Kentucky (more talented)
- South Alabama (more talented)
- Vanderbilt (more talented)

So, yes, he did a nice job. He also basically won games he should have won outside of Kentucky, really.

There seems to be quite a gap between #1 and #2 ...

Looking at that makes me even more sick considering we lost a ton of players and Pruitt had all that talent just to go 3-7 last year lol

Coaching certainly matters, but only on the fringes. You have to recruit at a certain level to break through a certain level.

And this is why our fans are excited about Drinkwitz. He’s got the nation’s 10th ranked class coming in (4th in the SEC). I think the program record for highest ranked class was previously around 24th under Gary Pinkel, so Mizzou has never seen this kind of talent before or close to it even.

Not sure where you think they are supposed to be but the universal ranking of Missouri is #13 in the SEC and somewhere in the #70s nationally.

yet somehow placed ahead of USC and Florida, in the end the wins and losses matter not "metrics". That said Mizzou was not good this year in any way exvept Badie being a bad arse.

They play 12 games, not 1.

A&M beat Alabama. Auburn beat Ole Miss. Tennessee beat Kentucky. Boston College beat Missouri. South Carolina beat Auburn. LSU beat Texas A&M. Mississippi State beat Kentucky. Kentucky beat LSU. LSU beat Mississippi State.

I think it depends on the level you are talking about.

To win a championship, no question it is more important than coaching but I think it balances out more as you go down the list.

If I'm a fan of a team that is pretty much in the middle of the pecking order in P5, I 100% take a good coach and mediocre recruiting classes vs a good recruiting class and mediocre coaching.

Definitely agree - especially if the "mediocre recruiter" has a system and a style and knows the kind of kids he wants to target that fit that system. The #25 recruiting class that is built around specific body types, schemes, projections in 2-3 years, etc is much different than a haphazard class of some 4-stars and then random guys who just fill out the class.

Stoops seems to be the best example of that. Find kids who you can develop, physically and mentally, and have them ready to step into roles by year 2-3 that they understand and were specifically recruited to play.

Chad Morris forever will make the cautious of the "but our recruiting class is doing well"

Pittman was able to come in and take advantage of some of the talent that Chad brought in but that talent was all going to be wasted under Chad.

Yep - Gus did that to an extent as well. Signed really good players at about half the position groups, almost completely ignored or whiffed on others (OL). You have to have an overall plan that takes into account an honest assessment of how you and your staff can recruit and, in areas where you aren't going to sign elite kids, how best to address that position.

Offensive line is clearly an area where, if you are good at assessing and projecting high school kids, you can sign a lot of "lower rated" kids, develop them and have a consistently solid position group. You might not churn out Top 10 pick left tackles, but you'll have units that work well together, do their job and are physically prepared to play in the SEC. I think running back is another position like that at this point. Tight end as well.

Other position groups, you just know that you probably gotta find 1-2 elite kids to really make it go (WR, DL, QB).

Talent-wise...Tennessee is 7th in the SEC and 3rd in the SEC East.

They finished tied for the 5th best conference record in the SEC and finished 3rd in the East.

...meh...

It’s surprising that 6-6 is the 6th best finish in the SEC.

1. Alabama - 12-1
2. Georgia - 12-1
3. Ole Miss - 10-2
4. Kentucky - 9-3
5. Arkansas - 8-4
6. Texas A&M - 8-4
7. Tennessee - 7-5
8. Miss St. - 7-5

6-6 is best for 6th in the SEC West (or 4th in the SEC East)...not in the SEC overall

8 or 9 SEC teams finish in the top 25 every year in recruiting. 8 or 9(should) finish in the top 25 of the final rankings.
