SEC Expansion History Quality: What athletic department was worth it?

SEC original expansion added South Carolina and Arkansas in 1991-92. A second expansion came 20 years later adding Texas A&M and Missouri. A third expansion this past year adding Oklahoma and Texas. Our sample size is very minimal on the newest members, but still curious to see how their first years have been.
Note: Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, and Arkansas still have opportunities to add to their national title amounts in the next month or two. Outdoor T&F in both mens and womens, softball, and baseball are some of the top sports still ongoing.
University of Arkansas
National Titles: 40
University of South Carolina
National Titles: 6
University of Texas
National Titles: 1
University of Oklahoma
National Titles: 1
Texas A&M University
National Titles: 4
University of Missouri
National Titles: 0

we have a national title in baseball and a few more we could claim in basketball but don't

Well, I suppose you could measure it that way, but the people in charge measure it in $$$.
Adding A&M and Mizzou in 2012 gave Slive the extra leverage needed to negotiate and launch the SEC network in an unprecedented deal (at the time), enriching ALL SEC schools.
There’s plenty of articles on it. You ought to read a few.

Are we going to see more of these types of posts the closer we get to football season?

This is all anyone gives a crap about. The college football world was eating itself and conferences that wanted to survive had to expand.
Prideful groups like the Pac-10 . . . .absolutely bristling with natties in every sport big and small, went belly up. The SEC would have broken apart as well if they could not offer their member schools the best payday.

Will be interesting to look at these numbers in 10-20 years.

Yep.
You either expand or lose.

Either way, Missouri remains at zero.

We got some good baseball and basketball games after adding South Carolina and Arkansas. We got two blue bloods with Texas and Oklahoma. We got nothing but gayer with the other two.

The Cocks IMO...
If only for Steven Garcia and the Old Ball Coach...

I’m glad it worked out like it did, because coast to coast travel would have been stupid, but it was ultimately going to be the sec or the big 10 for Texas/OU. That would have been a huge financial advantage for the Big10 schools.

That + CU/NU leaving was also the first step in getting rid of the Big12 as a competitor. Delaney wanted the Big12 dead. And when Texas started looking west he begged everyone to pump the breaks on expansion. He claimed it was about the sport. But it was really about making sure with the big12 dying that the pac12 wouldn’t be a major player.

The Pac12 also got played by Delaney.
Like any business, consolidation in college football can eliminate competition. Delaney and Slive worked to ensure if teams were competing for titles, they did it under SEC/Big10 banners.
You can imagine that 2012 a&m team churning through the big12. Maybe they get left out anyway. But anyway: they didn’t compete against the SEC for a spot. They competed in the SEC for a title.

In fairness, this needs to include an asterisk reminding everyone that they don’t care about playing Missouri.

Really? What nationals titles has Missouri won since joining the SEC?
Every new member has contributed to the conference…besides Missouri.
