You really need a special type player in the middle of the 3-4 defense at the nose tackle position. He must demand double teams and you must have more than one of these guys on the roster. You can't just have one because he will be gone to the NFL after one or two good years plus you will be playing at least two every game.

Your middle linebackers have to be great as well or you will get bowled over and this is one main reason why many teams have gotten away from it. You will need four of those guys as well.

If you have all those guys, it can give you some advantages.

My opinion, for what it's worth.

Florida runs a base 4-3 with multiple concepts. Play a lot of 4-2-5 though. More so than the base D.

Sounds a lot like Chizik's philosophy. Except he forgot the speed part

Everything is so personnel driven and it's really hard to predict 18 year olds. Like Saban said in the article, you can recruit a 3-4 OLB and they grow into a 4-3 DE. Also, you can recruit a kid carrying bad weight and they lose weight and end up in no man's land. Being able to go between fronts is smart and allows you to get the best players on the field and not the best for the scheme.

As for the 3-4, you can play single gap 3-4 and it can be effective but not on a every down occasion. In 2010, Oregon would shoot our 270 NG (Zac Clark) though the gap and our 3-4 DE (Brandon Bair) would slant into 3 offensive linemen. Those were some of my favorite plays.

3-4, blitz and cover disguised like no other. Keys are LBs w/various strengths and the differing skills at nickel/dime. We are loaded. Loaded does not equate to success, but it helps.

That's the Tommy Tuberville School of Defense. Speed kills. Play CBs at Safety, Safeties at OLB, OLBs at DE...which is why we always beat good passing teams(Florida) and couldn't beat good running teams(Arkansas).

W/TM7 in the lineup, LSU ran a 4-3 base but had TM7 as the third LB. we went back to a more traditional 43 base last year but had the 3 LB off the field on 2nd and 3rd down with the Nickel package in.

Our star Linebacker, Denzel Nkemdiche, plays one of the hybrid positions - Stinger, a LB/Safety hybrid.
Hey LSU'ers, look at this. What's that remind you of?

The 2013 version of Lou Tepper's infamous "Drop Linebacker." Don't know if it was the scheme, the personnel, the position coaching or what, but that was one of the biggest unmitigated diasters in LSU football history. Kind of like Chavis's "Prevent" in the last two minutes against and the Red Devils last season.

The last play was a blitz and thats why LSU got burnt so bad on a screen by Yeldon.
