The size of the state means there is not a single cultural identity in Texas. In fact, I'd venture to say that east Texas is more culturally in line with the deep south than it is with west Texas.

Many would agree with you.

I did too. At least the originally thoughtful and timely one that was written in 2012.

At least we're unique.

So ... I was responding to the poster who asked whether or not "Texas is better than the southern states?"
My response was that culturally, it's more it's own cultural animal than an affiliated chunk of the Deep South.
Absolutely there exist cultural differences within states.

That would be 100% correct.

While I agree that south Louisiana is culturally different from anywhere in the U.S., the comment about it being a "pocket of liberalism" is way off base.

One of the biggest ironies of state's politics is that Cajun communities are collectively minded, but they're fiercely republican in their political identities.

Also, lumping "Acadiana" in with SELA is a bit misleading, but I digress.

As far as "high taxes" are concerned, Louisiana has one of the lowest tax rates in the country.

We do have state income tax, but our property taxes and sales taxes are lower than most.
And if it wasn't for the Louisiana Purchase, Texas might be part of Mexico.

I think you're being a little too sensitive to Shane's post.

I disagree with this map. We are Southern, AND distinctly Texan. We were one of the original Confederate States of America.

We have our own flavor that adds to the stew of the South, just like Florida and Louisiana have their own identity outside of being a Southerner.

Very much agree.

Texas is very much a child of the south, but after the civil war the ravaged cotton economy gave way to the cattle culture. Millions of head of cattle just wandered free across the state, free for the roundup and drive north to the beef hungry markets.

It was an economic boost during and after reconstruction. Texas, as much as it can be southern in origin, was where the west really began.
