Guess I took this thread on the MSU board too literally.

Granted, that's just a sampling. But it will be interesting to see how a 6-6 season would affect his long-term prospects in StarkVegas.

You're still happy about the Bjork hire?

Morris is safe. No one fires a second-year HC unless the guy is calling hookers. Arkansas hired Morris to rebuild the Texas HS connections Bielema dismantled. They'll give him at least a few years to accomplish that.

If more opposing coaches are able to predict AU's offense based on the formation, Malzahn's goose is cooked, but only if AU is willing to fork over the buyout.

Too many Ole Miss fans here underestimate the power of the Old Boy Network. In Mississippi it's not what you can do but who you know that counts. Luke would have to have a disastrous, scandal-ridden season to get the axe in year 3. By year 4 the honeymoon will definitely be over.

Quoted for truth.

The bloom is off the rose of Chad Morris at Arkansas I can't deny. You don't post the worst season in school history and have people genuflecting to you. That having been said most everyone, especially the powers that be, realized this was going to be a major rebuild... hell, a burn the building to the ground and start all over build. He gets more time.

I think Luke could be gone at the end of this year but it would have to be an all time bad coaching job. What probably happens is that he under performs and starts next year with a set that isn't hot its molten lava. In which case having a former HC or two on the coaching staff just sitting there could do him in.

Gus is an odd position in that it would be a giant kick to the balls for Auburn to fire him with that contract he saddled them with. Yet, at the same time, I think the majority of the Auburn fans are more then willing to see Gus gone.

I've said before that oddly enough, Malzahn is Houston Nutt 2.0. He has a few disappointing seasons, a few bad ones, you are ready to see him go, and then he pulls an SEC championship appearance out of his bag of tricks. So, the AD and fans grit their teeth and keep him around.

Sooner or later what happened to Nutt at Arkansas is going to happen to Malzahn in that the relationship will become too toxic to keep him there.

Yeah that was just blowing off steam I think. Lots of sore assholes over losing to UK and FL. No one at State will fire a coach for an 8 win season. And definitely not before his 4th year I finished.

Luke or Malzahn could absolutely be fired this yea

Didn't Gus just sign a huge extension?

Luke was never going to succeed. He was put in charge to keep mass transfers from happening and setting the program back even further. If he can win 5-7 games and leave the roster not totally barren for his replacement then he did what he was supposed to do.

Unless Ole Miss goes like 2-10 and is completely uncompetitive or he is implicated in a crime ring, there is next to no chance that Luke is fired with an interim AD and interim chancellor.

I know last season was hard for Arky fans.

But I think Morris will rebuild them, however, it is not a quick fix.

The sad truth is, sometimes a team in the SEC can improve a lot but not have the wins to reflect that.

I think with the proper personnel, Morris will have a fun, dynamic offense to watch.

I am not a Gus hater, I want him to succeed, but I am very skeptical. I would think he is probably the coach under the hot seat the most. Everyone talks about the buyout, but it would like be negotiated and paid by boosters in any event.

ESPN would no doubt say firing him is jumping the gun, but that is their standard narrative.

Again, I hope we have a good season so it is a moot point.

Pretty sure he's already signed/have committed more Texas players than Bielema had in his entire tenure. Interested to see if it pays off for him down the line.

I'd take Morris off and add boom and stoops.

Luke is most likely to get the axe.

You could say that about anyone who has taken the Ole Miss job the past 50 years.

This.

Gustav's meltdown against LSU in '17 and the back-to-back losses against MSU and UTee have pretty much trashed my confidence that he can compete at the highest level in the SEC, regardless of what his ridiculous contract may indicate.

That said, I want him to prove me wrong, and he appears to have the tools to put together a solid team this year. It's a shame the schedule is not set up for a highly successful season.

I'm sure Moorhead isn't really on the hotseat, and probably won't be no matter how poorly his team fares this season. However, it should be noted that, unless his recent contract extension changed the terms, it will cost his university some $26 million less to get rid of him at the end of the 2019 than it will for AU to fire Malzahn.

I'd say Gus Malzahn. His protector is now gone and he's left, basically, on his own. Just having a winning season won't save him.

Right. Its why I said I thought the relationship between Gus and the fans might (or has already) become too toxic for him to stay there. Its not that the fans don't want him to succeed, its that they are starting to lose faith he will.

This is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a bad Auburn team this year. The schedule doesn't exactly roll out favorably for them though. A good Auburn team could have a fairly blah record and if you have one loss to a meh team like Arkansas or Ole Miss...

It is looking more and more like what happened at the end of Nutt's run at Arkansas. Nutt went 18-8 his final two seasons and won the West the year before he left. At a certain point the fans lose faith that a given coach can get it done even if he recently had a pretty good amount of success.

Morris isnt on the hot seat yet. Another 2-10 season it will be on fire next year though.

I think Gus will be fine this year. If he gets 7 or 8 wins, it will just be chalked up to the tough schedule and a new QB. Only if he is at 5 or 6 wins would be possibly be in trouble.

I'm not saying this is what the situation should be, but what I think it likely is.
