I usually only stick to watching SEC basketball until the tournament starts but is the officiating really that bad in every conference? It seems like every single game both teams get hosed on 5 or 6 calls. Or they let contact go throughout the game and then somehow find a quick whistle in the last four minutes of the game. These officials are making over 3,000 per game and the only thing they do consistently is get beat down the floor and tell coaches and players who are standing up on the bench to sit down. It makes watching a game unbearable at times, and I'm just curious if anyone watches enough OOC basketball to know if its an SEC problem or NCAA problem.

The sooner officials realize people don't go to these games to watch them blow their whistles the better.

The officials in last night's AU/OM game let the team's play. They missed several foul calls on both teams, but it was a much more pleasant watch experience than the games with 50+ fouls called.

Its been bad for a while but this year it seems to be just awful in the SEC and ACC, predominately. I watch some B12/B10/Pac 12 games and they seem to be officiated on an even keel. Officials are contracted as conference officials, so there are "SEC Officials" but are association contracted. I think it is the quality of people that are calling the games. Most of the basketball officials are people who are too lazy to hold a job in the real world. SEC football officials are chosen by the SEC and most are professionals and we don't see the crap in football like we do basketball. I suspect many officials do point fixing in basketball, too. I just have no use for officials, even more hate after last years F4

This. TV Teddy Valentine is the worst. If these guys were doing their jobs right we wouldn't know their names.

The same can be said for the TV broadcasts. Fox and CBS do a far superior job to ESPNs TV crews. ESPN has them doing all manner of sideshow circus shtick bullshite in the middle of game action. They spent 3 or 4 minutes last night during our game talking about suits and shoes, completely disregarding the ongoing game between UK and A&M. We tune in to hear you call the game, not listen to Bill Walton have acid flashbacks on air. fricking clown show.

What was the bullshite "Buzz Cam" that went on for like 3 or 4 minutes of game time?

Exactly. More stupid extraneous bullshite.

I realize those guys have to come up with fresh material each broadcast, or at least think they do.

I look at it like music. You dont need to fill every measure with eighths and sixteenth notes. You can let the music breath.

You dont need to constantly talk. Just call the game. Offer up interesting (and pertinent, not just arbitrary) stats.

I've watched multiple big east games this year. Their games flow way better.

Home teams usually get benefits of the calls unless the spread and/or the over/under is in doubt near the end of the game. Then it just depends on which way the refs are being paid to lean.

There were some really fishy calls near the end of the Ole Miss-LSU basketball game a few weeks back that helped a game that had pretty much already been decided hit the over.

So Blake Lovell did a quick numbers crunch last week over fouls per conference. It’s absolutely getting called more in the SEC. By quite a bit.

The officiating in the Ole Miss/AU game last night was absolutely horrible. It didn't favor either team though. Early in the game you could almost tackle somebody and late they blew the whistle if you breathed hard on somebody. Prancer runner (I don't know his name) doesn't belong on a REC league court.

The SEC is the #2 league in America in Free Throw Attempt to Field Goal Attempt %.

It's also #2 in block % and #4 in offensive rebound %, which does explain a bit why there are more fouls called. More teams crash the glass and more teams contest shots which is automatically going to lead to more fouls and more contact.

However, a 40% FTA to FGA ratio is just miserable to watch.

Here are the major conference ranks by Free Throw Rate (Free Throw attempts as a % of total field goal attempts) (out of 32 D1 conferences)

T1. SEC (40.0%)
12. Pac 12 (33.2%)
19. Big East (31.9%)
20. Big 12 (31.7%)
24. ACC (30.8%)
31. Big Ten (28.9%)

But if they’re #4 in offensive rebound %, then there should likely be at least one conference ahead of them in fouls called don’t you think? Who are the three ahead of them?

I honestly don’t think it’s we’re committing more fouls. I’ve watched a handful of ACC games, some B1G as well, and they’re fouling (by SEC standards) but it’s just not getting called.

Of course, the officials working our region aren’t exactly consistent in what a foul is. You literally can’t go for a rebound or a loose ball without something called in conference.

Yea - I'm not saying they are right, just trying to figure out what the reputation of the league is that is causing these league games to have so many more fouls called.

I mean I don't think officials just want to call more fouls in SEC games, and they all do games in other conferences too, so clearly there is a reason for it.

I’ve wondered about official relationships with coaches too. We probably have more coaches in the league right now that will get in an official’s ear than any of the other conferences.
