Well that's not true at all.

Won more national titles.

For all the stuff UGA fans heard about wins not mattering unless they were national titles, I just expected that to be a given.

Okay, so you're admitting to trolling.

Not really. I think there's a legitimate argument that Meyer did more at UF than Spurrier did.

It's close though. Their overall winning percentages are nearly the same. Spurrier had 6 conference titles and 1 national title in 12 seasons, Meyer had 2 conference titles and 2 national titles in 6 seasons. Spurrier's biggest SEC competions was I guess the Fulmer Tennessee teams? Meyer had to deal with Saban at Alabama.

Meyer is a much scummier person of course. Spurrier was cocky but is a good guy all around.

No, there's no legitimate argument whatsoever. The only difference is Urban was luckier and never had to play a team like 95 Nebraska. He didn't even have a winning record against final ranked teams. Nor did he have to deal with an FSU program that finished in the top 4 fifteen years in a row.

Gary Pinkel over Dan Devine is questionable.

Nobody will care though...

Would Nick Saban be the best coach in Mich State history?

Saban is a better coach than Les Miles. But Les Miles is still the Best “LSU coach” in history

Apples to oranges. Miles inherited a remodeled car. Saban remodeled it. He put the time and effort into the remodel. Les just drove it.

Spurrier's Florida completely dominated SEC football for a decade- Meyer was never able to accomplish that. He had three good seasons and managed to win one more championship, but the 8 and 9 win seasons cost him here imo

Didn't even have a winning record against final ranked teams. Spurrier went 46-26-1.

Not sure why you think it's funny.

I came over from the Rivals message boards when I got annoyed at their political posts too much. Was dawginsc there too, from 2001 until I bolted.

I actually like Spurrier (one of the few UGA fans who do). I got into football as a kid when Spurrier was coaching Duke. My family had season tickets the year they won a share of the ACC title. Dave Brown, Clarkston Hines, Randy Cuthbert... it was fun to watch.

But the stats say Meyer did more.

You're either a bandwagon fig or an alter.

While true, you also have to consider that he was coaching against Nick Saban, Les Miles, Tommy Tubberville, Mark Richt and Bobby Petrino. Fat Phil was probably the 6th best coach he was facing in his time at UF, but was the second best coach Spurrier had to deal with. Spurrier's toughest opponent was stallings the first part of his stay at Bama, but once he left it was Fulmer and a whole lot of nothing in terms of top coaching in the SEC. Maybe Terry Bowden counts as a top coach too. But Gerry Dinardo at LSU? Donnan/Goff at UGA? Dubose at Bama? Danny Ford/Houston Nutt at Arkansas?

There just wasn't much other than Tennessee in the SEC in the 90's after Stallings left Bama to provide a roadblock for UF. With Meyer, in his final 5 seasons at UF, either UF won the national title or another SEC team did (Bama once, LSU once, Auburn once).

So you also think that Larry Coker and Gene Chizik were better coaches than Richt.

I think Larry Coker was a better coach at Miami than Richt was at Miami.

We aren't discussing who the better overall coach is. If we were, Meyer is easily the choice over Spurrier when you add his OSU years.

We're discussing who was better at their school. You're choosing longevity in Spurrier over a higher average level of achievement against tougher competition in Meyer.

And you think Chizik was a better coach at Auburn than Pat Dye was.

“Jackie Sherrill over McKeen...”

Well not quite.

McKeen was 65-19-3 from 1939-1948 with an unbeaten season and a SEC Championship. And most likely would have been better except the 1943 season was cx due to WWII.

As another poster noted Jackie Sherrill from 1992-2000 would be comparable
67-48-2 with a SEC Championship game appearance. Unfortunately, 2001-2003 tarnished his overall success and brought his record back down to .500.

So McKeen is the best. Mullen could have entered the conversation had he quit chasing jobs during 2015-2017 era and just stayed at State. The 2018 team could have been one to challenge Bama for the SEC Championship but with a rookie coach (who was a good guy and not a bad coach by any means) who was in over his head, it did not happen.

Spurrier had a much better record against final ranked teams. Urban didn't even have a winning record. You keep ignoring this for some reason...

Interesting discussions could be had for Auburn. While AU folks love Shug, Dye elevated the program in the modern era. He changed the expectations, and the program has never looked back. If it came down to a fan vote, I'd expect Dye to be chosen as the greatest over Shug.

DawginSC said that it's impossible for Dye to be #1 over Chizik.

That is a tough one. Lot of recency bias there and the fact that Devine bailed on Missouri kind of knocks him down a bit.

Devine had two conference champions and several really good teams. Pinkel had zero conference championships but had several teams that were every bit as good as Devine's best teams if not better.
