Not too good at the maths I see.

I've spoken to older Gamecock baseball fans and they relish the fact that they have 2 baseball titles and the Tarheels finished runner up back to back years and didn't get over the hump against Oregon State. Had a Gamecock fan in Hoover tell me once that he hated UNC more than he'd ever hate Clemson. That was 2007 so even though they'd been in the conference for 15 years the scars were still there.
my dad was a 69' grad from Carolina. I was raised to hate UNC second behind Clemson...and not far behind. NC STATE and DUKE follow closely as well. Afterall it was Duke that made a big deal out of Mike Grosso and blocked him. They didnt like that we were primed to become the ACC power in basketball

SC had the stones to tell the ACC to kiss our arse.
The dislike Gamecocks have for the state of North Carolina is palpable. For our older fans it's pure rage.

we have to live with split families in-state in some instances - so it's a different strain of disdain for the orangenecks -
but the old north state .... well ...
Chuck Erickson and Eddie Cameron had their personal war with Big Frank ...which ulimately McGuire won - as did USC with eventual SEC membership -

Arkansas accepted in the summer of 90. Basketball started competing 91, football in 92. For the previous 35 years Arkansas was top 10 in winning percentage in football nationally. Arkansas had just been to the final four in basketball the previous season. In baseball had been to 4 college World Series with a runner up in the previous 11 years. This includes 3 trips to the CWS in the previous 6 seasons. Arkansas was winning national championships in track. So Arkansas was a highly respected program in those 4 sports. We were glad to get invited and accepted to the SEC. It was sad to lose some of the rivalries in the SWC, but Frank Broyles had the foresight and the clout to peak interest from the SEC (mainly this would allow for a conference championship game in football which would be a financial windfall for the conference). Most fans also saw the SEC as a much more prestigious conference and we felt honored to be invited.
What I took from all this is that moving to the SEC was the worst thing that ever happened to Arkansas athletics.

It was for football but not the rest.

A big problem was Ken Hatfield leaving for Clemson after back to back Cotton Bowl appearances and SWC championships after the 89 season. Jack Crowe’s teams were the worst since the 50s and that coincided with our entrance to the SEC.
The timing of a dip in football while going into a much tougher conference was a bad combination.

This is a pretty civil thread to be on page 5. I'm impressed.

The 4 Tobacco Road schools (UNC, Duke, State and Wake) ran the ACC for their benefit and only their benefit. The SC schools were treated like ugly stepchildren. Our BOT told them to f off and we left. Clemson's BOT chickened out at the last minute and they stayed. Had they left the ACC with us, they'd have gotten our invite.
Wow…I didn’t know that.

It was a "finally we have a home" moment. The best move this university ever made. The exposure and payoff are more than even I could have expected. We took a beating but that was expected.
But was it still expected 30+ years later?

Did Colorado also leave Big 12 at same time as Nebraska, Missouri, and A&M?

Years ago, I read something written by Jackie Sherrill where he said that after A&M started beating Texas in football once he became the A&M HC that Texas had 80+ private detective types spying on A&M coaches, players, and family members of players and coaches. Texas was trying to catch them doing something wrong so they could be turned in to the NCAA. Similar to what Texas did to SMU that ended with the SMU program getting the death penalty. That's some effed up shite.

As soon as that happened Coach Dooley began advocating for South Carolina as a culture and geographic fit for the SEC. We already played SC every year in everything so it wouldn’t disrupt our scheduling at all to have them as a league game. He probably would have advocated for Clemson but they couldn’t pull away from the Tobacco rd tit.
