Saban on Mekhi Brown incident: It amazes me how people pick out one little negative thing

Q. Could you talk about what happened with Mekhi Brown in the third quarter and whether you considered putting him back in the game after that?

NICK SABAN: What are you talking about? The penalty that he got?

Q. It looked like he had a confrontation with a staffer on the sideline.

NICK SABAN: I really don't know what you're talking about. The only thing that I have said to Mekhi Brown was you got a penalty. It was after the whistle. For pushing and shoving, which was an emotional decision, which is selfish on his part that penalized the team, gave them the ball on the 40-yard line instead of the 25-yard line. I just asked him if it was worth it.

He went back in the game, though, and played and actually made a tackle inside the 20 on the kickoff. So in a time where we have a lot of things to be happy about, it's kind of amazing to me that you would pick out one little negative thing and even ask about it. It's so insignificant to what happened in the game.

Of course he doesn't recall him trying to punch a coach. This response was 100% expected.

It was worth a question. Dude threw a punch, didn't get ejected, and then went after a coach/staffer. He's lucky Saban didn't see it, imo. Would have been suspended 2 plays in their next cupcake game.

Yeah, most of the posters won't believe it, but Saban wasn't around where the incident with the coach went down and it was all over in a flash. I'm sure he knows about it now, but at the time he had far bigger things on his mind that watching what was happening on the bench behind him.

Do we know if Saban witnessed the sideline episode?

Yea I seen it! Another staffer ran up to Nick and tugged on his left rear pocket ( he's not allowed to touch the wallet pocket).

Nick then stopped paying attention to the game and said what is it, Son?

The staffer then nervously twiddled his thumbs and said coach! coach! #48 is being a big meany to the staff! and started to try and explain what happened.

Nick put his fingers on the staffers lips and said "shhhhhh! shhhhhh! I need some water."

Same thing happened to Ronnie Harrison 2 years ago. Coach ain't getting rid of a fast, violent baller like mehki brown with a mean streak like that. He will get some extra coaching.

Yeah it's impossible to believe that Saban wasn't aware he went after a coach

If the coach or someone who saw didn't tell Saban, how would he know?

Emotional game with young men fighting with other young men in a contact sport. It’s a ridiculously fine line to walk and perhaps I’m being a homer but I’m sure this young man can be defined by more than just one incident stupid incident. Threw a punch at a guy wearing a helmet, oh the horror!

Emotions are running high in a football game. He made a bad decision on the penalty and it cost his team. Had they lost, in his mind he would have contributed to that loss. He just didn't want to think about it or talk about it and flew off the handle.

People make way too much of stuff like that.
