From article:
quote:

"One of them wanted $500,000 and for us to get his girlfriend into law school at Alabama and pay for it. I showed him the door," Saban reportedly said.

The second half of the ask from Cohen is something not many universities are going to indulge to be quite honest. Especially considering that the law school is one of the more respected schools/colleges on campus.

I don’t know about that. His current class seems pretty good.

This is what I don't get about the "Saban Won't Adapt to NIL" stuff from ranters. He just signed the easily #1 class in recruiting in an environment where NIL looms over signings.

He's just not playing around with explicit quid pro quo statements from players. On paper, that is an NCAA violation anyway if I understand the rules around it. Saban can't be the one directly securing money for them. It has to come from a 3rd party.

Didn't both these guys sign with Miami? Seems like Mario Cristobal may have been trying to entrap Alabama with recruiting violations.

I, for one, NO Saban fan by any means, find this believable & like what he did. NIL money is one thing, asking a school to get someone into law school, not even Jay Bilas would think this is a good thing & in the spirit of helping a student athlete. This story reeks of an agent's role in both players. A bad role.

Asking for admittance to law school is like what those Hollywood actors and actresses went to jail for

This is kind of shite NIL has become. A current player wanted $500K and for Saban to pull strings to get his girl friend into Law School.

Go frick yourself!

Yes Saban is speaking the truth. But when Alabama was giving players chargers he didn’t say a word. Now he has to outbid other teams, it’s a problem now.

I'm all for players getting paid because it is now a multi-billion dollar business and they should be getting a piece of the pie. But something has to be done about NIL. It's a complete free for all. They need to have a transfer window like the NFL does. Also, they need to just admit that this isn't really college football anymore and sign these guys to contracts either as employees or independent contractors.

Fuk Saban that fuking hypocrite!! He has a short memory to go with his short stature, he forgets using nil money to start tampering with players "Eli Ricks and Boutte", before the season's over

The US Supreme Court has said that college football players have the right to earn money through NIL. If someone wants to pay them, they can. I think you may be overestimating Kirby's influence on the future of NIL.

It may be that 30-40 schools need to band together and form a league and institute some sort of draft and a salary cap. Not sure how that would work but something is going to have to happen

The players have to organize and form a union which could then negotiate something like this with that 'league'. There are many many examples of such thing already in place (NFL, NBA, MLB, etc....).

Funniest thing about the whole story is the idea that Cohen thinks he's worth money.

Honestly - I think Saban is way ahead of the curve on this. He's looking at how to keep 85 players in one locker room pulling in the same direction. Yes - NIL allows money to flow into pockets, and that flow will not always be equal. But at the same time, as we've seen at A&M, you have to be able to manage that process or else a team will fall apart.

But I admit, I'm biased. Because I think Nick Saban is the smartest manager of talent I've ever seen in the college game. He's smart enough to realize that just because he CAN do a thing, doesn't mean he SHOULD. And that is really, really damn rare.

"They all had notes". Yea, after 0 down & minimal mthly payments, said notes being torn up when the player moved on to the pros. Pretty common knowledge. With Saban owning at least one Mercedes dealership, it's perceived to be a bit too risky to "sell" bama players a Mercedes. The Charger gig has been in place for several decades.

He's not wrong & probably not even the first coach to pass on players NIL demands, but someone will pay until there is some actual structure/ rules around NIL.

Sorta funny that a player thought he could buy his girlfriends actual entry into law school. Would have been an interesting conversation with the Dean.
