Scheme DID in fact beat talent that day.

We ran for 545 yards. That is not scheme.

the best team in the East that year didn't need its starting QB for the first 3 quarters to beat a top 5 Missouri on the tigers' home field.

We didn't have our starting QB at all that game and had a freshman start.

Missouri’s O was incredible. Despite knowing the defense wouldn’t make stops, they kept their team in the game. Eventually faded in the 4th but that O earned my respect. Save for the DEs, their defense was pathetic though. It looked like a typical Big 12 defense to be honest.

We had an insane TO margin. We were amazing at rushing the passer but yes.... Auburn was probably the worst team we could have faced in the SEC Championship that season. The creative play calling fricked us up.

We just stopped calling plays and gave the ball to Mason. We told Mizzou what we were doing, and they couldn't stop it. Our OL and Mason just manhandled that shite defensive line.

Mizzou had a terrible defensive gameplan

Auburn’s offense the two years Nick Marshall ran it were damn good. Your DC couldn’t make a plan that would have worked. Our OL, Mason and Marshall were just really good.

Our OL blew your DL up and ran at will. You all had a really good O as well, but 545 rushing yards is dominating a defense and pretty much manhandling them. No game plan would have worked.

Anyone here who says the game was a blowout simply didn't watch. The game was back and forth until Auburn finally pulled away with around 5 minutes left. Neither defense decided to show up.

I was there.

It was a back and forth explosive game.

Mizzou decided to go for it on their own 20 late in the game and did not make it.

That was the turning point to me.

And the fact that for some reason Mizzou had only 5 or 6 in the box most of the game and we ran for 545 yards.

That's still the highest scoring SEC championship game. Also both teams had huge turnarounds from the seasons before, I can't think of another time that's ever been the case in Atlanta: Mizzou from 5-7 to 12-2 and Auburn 3-9 to 12-2

The ignorant narrative around here and on SEC Network is "Missouri was blown out of both SEC title games". The score was 45-42 going into the 4th quarter with both teams trading punches most of the game. Even after Auburn scored to go up 52-42 I didn't think the game was over by any means with how Missouri kept moving the ball. If they could score and force Auburn into another turnover then it was anyone's game. Missouri turned Aubie over twice earlier in the game, so it wasn't that far fetched of a scenario. Aubie was the better team that day, but the final score wasn't indicative how competitive the game was.

Steckel was usually clueless in big games making defensive adjustments. So it's no surprise he had no answer for Mason and Marshall. But a 3 point game in the 4th quarter is hardly a blowout. Auburn racked up about 680 yards of offense and Missouri rolled up around 530. It was an entertaining game for 55 minutes. Which is a lot more than can be said of many of the more recent SEC title games.

Three NFL draft picks on the line including a #1 and #2 but I think their strength was rushing the passer

The biggest moment was the 4th and goal from the 1 to give Auburn the lead again.

If Mizzou stopped Mason, which on TV it really looked like it, who knows what would have happened after.

NVm. That one ended up being a TD.

Anyway, I think this game would have been different if Frank the Tank was 100%. He was never quite the same after the injury he had that year.

Mizzou and A&M coming from the big 12 I think their philosophy was to rush the passer, not really suited to
stopping downhill running teams and misdirection.

Missouri’s defense was completely destroyed. Way more so than Auburn’s and that was supposedly the suspect defense of the two.

Correct, and for some reason our DC at the time decided it was a good idea to completely scrap the defensive scheme we’d been running all year with one week to prepare. It was disastrous and cost us our NC.

LOL

That “shite defensive line” had two SEC POY in the room and 5 eventual draft picks and one guy who definitely would have been a high pick if not for a car accident later in his career
How uninformed some of you clowns are is flat out amazing
