He was a walk-on. But yeah that’s why I said generally

Also call it whatever you want but it had the same result as a turnover

Pretty good considering he started off 0-5, 0-4 at LSU

Luckily he beats Auburn like a red headed stepchild in Tuscaloosa

That's not true.

Our punting last year was atrocious, but generally it's been average to very good.

Our kick coverage was dog shite for the first half of the Saban Era (thanks Bobby Williams) but that's been really good the last 5-6 years, too.

Our kicking was actually decent from 2007-2012 (Tiffin, Shelley)......but ever since then it's been a disaster, obviously.

Yea, I didn't think the timeline made sense. Not sure where that number comes from.

Yes the same way you celebrate replacing your 1998 Geo Metro with a 2002 Nissan Maxima.

DeLong averaged 33 yards per punt. He had 1 punt out of 10 go over 40 yards. We were literally hoping a defensive linemen would get a chance to punt.

Most of the Bammers here wanted him over the starter.

DeLong was one of the worst punters I have ever seen so that’s not saying much

Because the starter is literally the worst college punter I have ever seen.

So why downplay him as a walk on?

Thats what people do when they're trying to excuse poor performance.

Pretty sure he was saying that Perine was a walk on. And with kickers and punters walk ons or not are pretty irrelevant. Walk ons kick/punt all the time.

Bigger thing was Perine was relatively raw as a punter and didn't have a lot of experience punting in general and definitely not at the big level. It's why they didn't want to use him in 2019. However, DeLong was so bad so consistently they pretty much had to. And it cost us vs LSU.

I was just asking a question, I wasnt sure why Perine being a walk on was a big deal?

The bigger deal is he was a walk-on who was really raw, had a big leg but took forever and just hadn't punted all that much.

He probably wasn't ready to punt in the SEC, was a guy we liked and would want to see after another year or two working every day on timing and just catching and kicking, but DeLong was so damn bad and Reichard was hurt.......we just didn't have any other options.

Saban gave DeLong every frickin chance in the world to even be decent.........and my gosh he just continually was awful.

You’re not sure why starting a walk-on punter against a top 5 team is a big deal?
