Let get real here...how many big dollar ballfields, zoos, parks, etc are financed through non-government entities? The cities usually have to pony up and invest in SOMETHING, with the idea that it will spur visits and other spin-off, private, development.

And every single public works type project in history has been rife with corruption and kickbacks, going back to the Romans. Its literally the cost of progress.

I can see why he was so hell bent on thinking Lowder, Milton, and Yella Wood Guy were the hedge funders for Cam Newton coming to Auburn

For all the people shitting on Bham this came out today...

Forbes names Birmingham number 6 on list of top 20 emerging downtowns

quote:

Birmingham, Ala.
Downtown, the number of residents downtown has increased 32% since 2000, with 737 planned units in the construction pipeline. A stadium for the minor league baseball team the Birmingham Barons has been built at Railroad Park, a green space created on a former industrial site next to a rail corridor. Office space absorption was positive in 2012, with net 126,000 square feet leased out, and downtown employment density relative to the southern city’s size is comparable to Philadelphia’s business district, according to REV Birmingham.

Most of the growth referenced in the Forbes article is from private funding, which is awesome. That is how Birmingham will recover...

"Up and coming" implies something came and went. Congrats though. Maybe in 10 years or so it will be a nice downtown.

So?

Being on a positive list along with major cities like New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh is still impressive. Props to Memphis and Louisville which were also on the list.

The bottom line to the point BBQ is making is that residents and outsiders are always sh###### on Birmingham without ever acknowledging a lot of the positive stuff happening with the city. The bad stuff is certainly there and has been there for a long time and has been :beatdeadhorse: . The positives should also be acknowledged as well.

Birmingham is no different than any other "large city" as far as moving the SEC baseball tournament. I know what we have and I enjoy it and it's one of my favorite things to do each year. I go to almost all of the games and have been sitting in the park at 1:00 AM for different reasons (rain delays, long earlier games, etc.). Birmingham - and any other venue can't match the atmosphere that Hoover provides. I have never had to deal with traffic because of where I stay but I can imagine that could be an issue but I am quite happy where it is.
Most cities have suffered from poor management, graft and corruption for years and the now have what they deserve. Inner city stadiums like Regions Park won't come near the atmosphere (or attendance) that Hoover sees now. Perception is reality and the perception is that Birmingham downtown is just not safe. Families and old folks will stay away. Sorry - just the truth.

The only people that have this perception are those that live in the surrounding areas and if perception was all that mattered NOLA and Memphis would be ghost towns

That's awesome that you enjoy Hoover. It sounds like your affinity for the Hoover location is in some way heightening your distain for Birmingham. They can be mutually exclusive opinions. It's not so much that you "can't stand Birmingham" it's that you really really love the Hoover location?

Well, if you want to move the SEC baseball tourney downtown, then that's kind of important.

I will say this - Hoover Met is a nice stadium, and i enjoy it - but it could be a lot better, and honestly management there for a few years didn't care much about improving. seats in the box seats being broken, and never being replaced is one small example.

I think the new stadium will be nice, however i do agree that they low balled it at 8000 capacity.

I worked the met for both the barons and the SEC tourney for 5 years as an usher, ticket taker and parking manager.

I wonder if there could be a way to play games at both venues...Seems like with league expansion and increased games, (with more expansion on the horizon) multiple venues in close proximity could be viable? Hell, play a couple at Rickwood...
