After Saban, rate the coaches in the SEC from best to worst. Base it on pure head coaching ability and try not to factor in the the strength of the school/program or psat success.

Simply best coaching skills.

I'll go first:

Meyer - done it at many levels with BG, Utah, and UF

Brooks - at a major power like Bama or UF he would be considered one of the best. Last coach to lead Oregon to the Rose Bowl.

Nutt - A little goofy, but he gets a lot from his players and has been successful in the SEC for a long time. When was the last time OM played in back to back JAN bowls?

Spurrier - dropped off since leaving UF, but still has good skills. Handcuffed by ability of USCw to compete at a high level in SEC.

Petrino - a prick, but good coach. He has Arkansas trending in the right direction. He'd be good at any big-time program.

Richt - a few asst coaching mistakes and lack of more consistent success, but overall very good program leader.

Johnston - see comments about Brooks. He is very fundamentally sound.

Miles - good recruiter, but makes too many game-day mistakes. Lack of talent development, but good early record at LSU.

Mullen - looks like solid overall skills. If he runs the Dixon four times at the goal line he beats LSU.

Chizik - Not bad 1st year.

Kiffin - sleazy.

I think Meyer still deserves to be considered the best in the conference.

Spurrier is at least right behind Saban. People are stupid that underrate Spurrier. The guy fricking built Florida. Saban has never taken a team in USC's position to the promise land.

These are my picks without explanation right now... not enough time to type all that before open.

Saban
Spurrier
Meyer
Richt/Petrino
Petrino/Richt
Nutt
Miles

Jury is still out on Kiffin/Chizik/Mullen. I know i'd rather have Chizik than the other two at this point. and I have no clue about Johnson or Brooks really.

I'd have Richt towards the bottom, just above Miles.

It's truly a sad state of affairs to think Kentucky football is very close to passing UGA on the SEC food chain. Brooks has done a helluva job, and to think he was almost run out of there in 2006.

I think Nutt has only once before. It was his first two years at Arkansas. We lost to Michigan 1-1-99 and beat Texas 1-1-2000. The only other bowl game he won the next 8 years at Arkansas was the Shreveport Bowl of '03.

Maybe not but Saban did take over a probation riddled Michigan State program and had them playing in a new year's day bowl within five years. South Carolina has a ton of high school talent. If Saban coached there, he would keep most of that talent in-state and have South Carolina in position to win 9-10 games a year.

I don't know @ sad state of affairs, but I understand what you are saying for sure. I've been on here for a couple of years pushing Brooks down ya'lls throats, and finally he is getting the respect he deserves.

CFN had him as a mention for NCOTY award.

Not really meaning a sad state of affairs. Just making a comparison. This would almost be the equalivent to UGA basketball passing UK hoops. I do like it that Kentucky has improved. Now it's a 4 team race in the east, per se.

Saban (concensus)
Meyer (concensus)
Petrino (has Arky on an upward path at a hard job)
Brooks (doing more per talent than anyone)
Chizik (me being a homer)
Miles (keeps a program going)
Kiffin (hard to tell yet, recruiting well though)
Mullen (this close to beating LSU & Ole Miss)
Spurrier (yeah, but what has he done at USCe?)
Richt (major slippage this year)
Nutt (limited is the best word to describe him)
Johnson (Vandy's back in the cellar)

I don't see how anyone can necessarily think that since both Lou Hotlz and Steve Spurrier have coached there and haven't done something truly great. It is a average program with limited resources and the hardest conference.

Holtz was way past his prime when he got to South Carolina. The program was in horrid shape. At one point, they lost 21 games in a row. Still, Holtz got South Carolina to finish as high as 13th in the polls within three years. Now imagine a superior coach taking over that program in far better shape. Saban would be successful there especially with the SEC East being as down as it is.

Also if Miles is so low on the list and LSU still is a top program I guess any of the other coaches in the SEC would win a NC at LSU every year.

I wasn't expecting so much respect for LSU.

South Carolina has no tradition, not a ton of in state talent, and is surrounded from bigger programs from two major conferences. I am sorry, but it is asking a shite ton for them to suddenly be competing for SEC titles with great programs like UGA, UT, and UF in the east. Also the LSU, Auburn, and Bama programs are also light years ahead in the west. They are below Arkansas as a program and competing with Ole Miss. I think it would be extremely difficult for any coach. Saban and Spurrier are HOF type coaches and you don't fall out of your prime as a coach. You simply lose your passion. I don't think either Holtz or Spurrier coached/coach without passion at USC.

A coach doesn't fricking for get how to coach. Why do people think that. It is one of those things you can do until you almost die as long as the passion is there.
