When's the last time UF didn't have a good defense?

It's easy to get good defensive HS recruits at UF. Collins seems to be fine even after MSU fans said he sucked. Didn't notice many blown calls and/or coverages this year.

Defense isn't going to be an issue at FL. It's all about the offense. He has to fix that within the next two years.

Sorry, you're right. UF will always have an all-world defense.

Well they ended about how I thought they would without a pass threat. When Mac gets his QB back, teams can't load the box without consequences. I think he will do well and win the East often.

Not sure he's anything special at all. Florida looked pretty good early, but not really great. Pulled out a miracle win over Tenn with what seemed like a thousand fourth downs. Lost to LSU that proved to be just a one man team. Lost their qb for cheating, then struggled to beat a terrible Vandy team, a terrible South Carolina team, a terrible FAU team. Lost and looked dreadful against FSU, and inept against Alabama. The only true improvement they had was that Grier was a better qb than they've had in a while to start the season. Not sure how anyone could really be sold on him as a good coach yet.

I don't know how your team could have done any better was the absolutely horrible play at the QB position. We all know that position is important, but about a decade ago LSU had a stacked backfield, NFL-caliber wide receivers and a decent OL coming back. I remember thinking "if we have someone who can just take snaps we will be OK." Not so. I have since changed my belief that in today's game you have to have a playmaker at that position. He doesn't have to be Cam Newton or Tebow but he has to help you win games.

McElwain has quickly become one of my favorite coaches in the SEC. I can see how a recruit would want to play for him and how his current players would want to play for him. He represents himself and the University well. I say give the man time to instill his program before we can decide if he is HC material.

Would read again.

Fine. Still the narrative is still the same. With a cheating qb, Florida looked good and coach was getting lots of credit. Grier got suspended, and it was back to the same Gators of the last few years. Where was the improved coaching?

He had a great plan for Bama. He just din't have the players to execute it. Their plan was as sound as I've seen against along with Ole Miss and UT. You have a good solid, non-gimmicky coach that is going to win some big games. He just needs HIS personnel.

Couldn't agree more. He is going to have a war with Kirby Smart every year for the next decade for control of the East. It's going to be the next big thing in the SEC. The East is going to have a revival. They may even win a few SECCG's and possibly an NC or 2 in the next 5 years. But, probably NOT NEXT year. Mac and even Kirby need to build their own personnel. Smart has to change the culture. You can't do that in one season. Mac was just lucky this year. He may not have as good a year next year but have a better team.

Overrated? Flukish? Malzahn-ish? Pretty obvious UF will suck next year without Grier right? How long does McElwain last before UF begins looking for another coach? TIA

Obviously, you can't hold your team back when they're winning, but I think it hurts the coach when they come in and have immediate success. It almost puts off a false sense of reality to the fan base. It's not that the coaches aren't good at what they do, it's that they had a lot of things go their way and success was found... You see it with Malzahn, he came in his first year and went straight to the Championship game and it absolutely handcuffed him from having down years... Look at muschamp, i might be mistaken, but his second year at Florida he won 11 games and immediately the pressure was on... I believe as fans we put too much on these guys to come in and build a program in 2-3 years. I think McElwain takes a step back next year, maybe 7-8 wins, but if they'll have patience with him, he can build a strong program.

And judging from last year's class and the current commits, not a good recruiter.

This is some dumb shite, you do know he was hired late last offseason right and only had a few weeks to round up some top recruits which he did at the last min and currently UF has a top 10 class.

I think he is solid as a rock. defense didn't miss a beat and got a little better. Offense will come around. the offense under muschamp was a shite show It will take a year or two to get it where he wants it. He will have /florida looking a lot like alabama in a year or two. He is a great coach and that was a great hire.

I think he's a good coach, but he is still overrated. He will improve the offense in the next year or two, but there will be a drop off on defense. I think he will have a similar tenure at UF to Richt at UGA.

Can tell all that from one season, coaching a team that got the last HC fired?

Ppl act like this team went to the last NCG, always saying he won with Muschamps players. Well that arguement only works if Muschamp won with Muschamps players which he didnt.
