Gus' teams are like a really sweet older muscle car. Every now and then all the parts work together at the same time and the thing really screams down the track. But much of the time, one part or another isn't funtioning properly and the car inexplicably breaks down. She's always a beaut to look at and when she's running on all 8, watch out.

A rare play does not necessarily mean it is lucky. Go back and watch the play. Initially Ryan Smith is back to return but during the icing timeout a change is made and Chris Davis is put back to return. Watch how the AU players start to set up the wall for the return. Bama was not prepared to cover a return and that goes to coaching.

Hell, I would like Davis' chances returning it back 7/10 times with the personnel advantage AU had on that play.

You're right. It does not necessarily mean it is lucky in it's execution. Doesn't change anything about what I posted.

And for the record, I would imagine most Bama, UGA, and LSU fans were thrilled when Gus got the long-term extension with AU. That alone should tell you something (like it told Bama fans something when AU fans were saying Mike Shula deserved more time).

But fact is, if those two highly unlikely plays had not happened (and in the same year, yet) Gus would have had 4 losses that year, too.

Auburn was winning that game in OT regardless of what happened on that FG return.

Saban gave Gus one of those wins to give his team more rest for their playoff run.

Saban playing chess, everyone else playing checkers.

Where else did all this “luck” take place?
you do realize that if the Georgia defensive back just knocks the ball down Auburn doesn't even play in the SEC Championship. Win or lose the Iron Bowl Alabama would have won the West

I don't hate or love Gus as a coach. We're stuck with him either way and I understand why. Gus was fortunate to be put in a position where he could get a big time contact and AU was put in a position to have to pay it. It is what it is. He's also been able to maintain some success with his in state rival dominating, which you have to commend.

What would you say the odds of a kick 6 happening again? I mean a FG returned for a TD? I've never seen it happen before. maybe it has, but it's a rarity.
Given the personnel that was on the field, I would say it would happen more than once in 10 tries. Auburn easily had the advantage in terms of athleticism on the field and everyone knew Alabama wouldn’t make the field goal.

The fastest player on the field for Bama was probably the kicker. It was pretty much DBs, Linebackers, defensive ends vs. Oline, tight ends, and kickers. Speed wins every time.

Talent plus the GT effect. Gus runs a sort of offense that a less-talent rich program might run to occasionally upset good teams. He just has SEC talent at his disposal. Same way Freeze pulled it off. It happens. Saban is GOAT, not infallible. Even the best mess up from time to time. Doesn't mean the one who beats them is really good

Ball would have to be kicked to the exact spot it went to in the game every time. If he misses wildly bad there is no chance at a return. If he's got the leg for it but misses wide left or right, no return. Had to be a miss that was (relatively) lined up and just short.

Not a huge Gus fan. He has been stubborn to a fault. Lost 5 games with Nick Marshall and a ton of talent in 2014.

Things I give him credit for...

1.Had to fix D even at the expense of his O and he did

2.Plays and recruits against 3 teams every year that sign top 5 classes...two of which are closet and biggest rivals and one of those is instate and currently in greatest run in college history. The fact that AU is even relevant or has a chance to win an SECC right now is remarkable.

Could not agree more. Georgia and Alabama have 10 times the resources and natural advantages and we still slug it out. frickin love being an Auburn Tiger.

What’s really pathetic is that you actually believe this.
It’s so pathetic that I almost feel sorry for you.

Almost.

I think he gets to tricky with his play calling . I think when he had running QBs that couldn’t pass he called to many passing plays . I think he gets away from the hurry up to much and makes to many personal changes when running the hurry up offense . I don’t think he is a bad coach . Saban is clearly the best coach after that multiple coaches are in the running for 2-6 .
