Question about LSU and Bama greatness.
I don't know about Alabama, but LSU is better than last year. We have a QB. Young DBs are ridiculously talented. LBs are MUCH better. Running game is sick and OLine was pushing Washington 4-5 yds off the ball all night.
I think LSU has more upside than last year.
While I agree that Mett is a huge upgrade over JJ, I'm still not convinced he's a world-beater. He looked great against UW, but I don't think he got hit very much in that game. Against NT he looked kinda shaky because he was under pressure the whole game (and took that one MASSIVE shot). He's like most good QBs where his performance is directly tied to how much pressure he's under. That pressure will be significantly ratcheted up come SEC play, which scares the hell out of me seeing how often AJ has been getting sacked against UM and WKU.

A huge upgrade is all LSU needed. He doesn't have to be a world beater when he has the supporting cast around him.

LSU looks a little better
Bama looks about the same right now
Bama looks about the same right now

So that means we will only win by 14-0 in Miami against LSU this year?
I'll take it

I think Bama looks not as good as last year but that was expected. That was a very good(some say great, defense was) team and no team loses all those guys and is better.
LSU isn't as good, yet but it's hard to tell honestly because we haven't been tested at all. I do think Mett gives us the potential to be better.(Not necessarily the talent because Jefferson and Lee were talented but more the mentality. Mett's a gunslinger that doesn't fear any pass).
I completely agree on the gap in the conference but imo it doesn't stop there. I think Bama/LSU have a significant gap on the country, USC and Oregon included. Don't think either of those 2 could hang for 4 quarters as of today. In general I think all of college football is down this year.

There is a conceptual basis that you can see translating in terms of coaching scheme down to player execution.
Case in point: JJ by the end of his time here could merely audible from left run to right run. That's it. After 4 years.
After two games we see the staff trusting-and Mett translating that trust through execution on the field-the QB to read the field and process what he sees in order to make positive plays for the O and keep the chains moving.
Case in point: Mett/LSU go Luftwaffe in the Spring Game and chuck it deep over and over ane over. Against UNT, the Mean Green DB's play WAY off, and based on secondary alignment, when they only rolled one safety, Mett audibled repeatedly to the boundary receiver screen or quick passes to the WR.
As a result, we chewed them up, but later on, the staff used the out-and-up/pump fake as a constraint play to punish UNT for reacting and rolling coverage to stop the edge passing.
Fast forward to this week. U-Dub is playing for the Screens. Instead we're going quick slant to take advantage of their overprotection of the edge.
We aren't throwing much, but I see a slow progression and a simple, clear method that attacks specific areas of the defense based on coverage and situation, and reacts using check-with-men's and audibles given to the QB, as well as constraint plays to run off our base concepts.
It's simple, but simply revolutionary for our offense. Wonderful to watch and enjoy the execution.

I think LSU has some improvement left in them. Mett still has to work with his receivers, who have to get better at holding on to the ball. Mills stepped up a lot more than some expected, but whether he can keep the improvement up is unknown. But, I have faith that Chavis will keep him pointed in the right direction.
As for Alabama, I think the O-line has to step up to protect McCarron a little better, but he is much more clutch than he was last year.

LSU is still gonna destroy state like they do every year

it is early and I think Bama will be fine and keep on being Bama. As far as LSU goes, maybe it's just me, they look pretty good and with Mett, this years team shits on last years.

Bama and LSU are certainly the class of the SEC as well as the entire country. Arkansas obviously sucks but Georgia looks to be improved over last yr so I would call the gap between them and everyone else a push.

Having a legit QB might just make LSU a lil better this year, maybe.
I don't think the QB upgrade is as big as the LB upgrade. I'll put our LBers up against anyone's now.

He doesn't need to be, he just has to be efficient and its over for everyone else.

I would take 2011 LSU week 2 over 2012 LSU week 2 but this team has a much higher ceiling. I do feel like Bama has regressed slightly but not much.

i think LSU looks better now, than they did this time last year. i haven't seen enough of bama to say, but they beat the shite out of a top 25 team so.....

too soon to say exactly how good either LSU or Bama is this year
subjectively I feel like the middle of the SEC West fell off tho - Arky and Auburn are worse than last year... Ole Miss is better, MSU may be better
All four of the top four teams in the SEC East could be substantially better though - UGA, USC, Fla, Tenn... so while the gap between LSU/Bama and the SEC West #3 might be larger the gap between LSU/Bama and the SEC East #1 is probably a lot smaller

I still believe Bama is untouchable
Nobody in our league is untouchable. There are several teams in the SEC that could beat Alabama or LSU if they play less than their best football. This isn't the Big 10.
