I'm sure there are intelligent star athletes in professional sports - but it doesn't look like there are many. If these videos are true representations of the majority of "STAR" athletes it's really disheartening. Most are obviously ignorant fools with no other path in life. Despite earning millions 78% of them still manage to go bankrupt in a few short years. My fandom has changed from watching these videos.

Fair enough. I mean this is what you’re gonna get with any sport that’s dominated by *people from impoverished areas*

With all due respect to your reply poverty and impoverished areas don't lower your IQ and make you stupid. Genetics does that. Somehow the genetically dumbest people are the ones that find their way to pro sports - and that truly is disturbing.

And you've made this determination just from the video?

Do you know or have you actually met any pro athletes?

Can people be any more full of propaganda than what comes from the mouth of so-called smart people?

IQ, common sense, thinking ability, abstract thought, creativity, talent, etc, is GENETIC folks. 100% GENETIC. Not race, nationality, or the University we attended. It's in our DNA and no one has cornered the market on anything that wasn't given you as a gift. Meaning none of us had a damn thing to do with it, it was there when the sperm hit that egg. We just often like to conduct ourselves as if we invented it somewhere in our laboratory.

People aren't short of talent or smarts, they are short of opportunity.

Wow.

My DNA must have changed a shite load between my 20th birthday and my 50th.

Not sure what you mean by "talent" but all the other abilities/traits you mentioned have improved immensely in the time span.

ETA Theres something to be said for maturity and wisdom.

Interesting.

I was in a mandatory one for 31 years. You should probably call the IRS.

Opportunity is the ability some have to add to natural gifts. If you were a progeny with music and then got a chance to study with Mozart, you would sound better and have no doubt more opportunities to invest that talent. Either way, music is still the gift.

Lots of people are smart, but it will always be in different areas of life. Some think in numbers, science, some have the moral of the story figured out before others. For some, retaining info is easy and makes learning much faster. The guy that can jump out of the gym is probably going to love basketball more than someone who doesn't share the genetic gift. Fred Astaire only danced like that because he could. We didn't decide these gifts for ourselves, we merely enhanced the inclinations and strong traits that are there.

Anyone can emulate, few can be the best.

Agree with everything in your post but the last line. Many people are short on talent and smarts. When they are given an opportunity they can't capitalize on it because they're not smart enough to do the work or plow the opportunity. It's sad but it's the truth. Most of the Pro players in these videos don't have the mental capacity to take advantage of opportunities that require intellectual activity.

How many of us are doing work that absolutely fits our emotional and physical gifts? Not many. Opportunity seldom shows up for most of us on that level. We are more likely settling for paying the bills. that makes us victims as well.

We're not all managers and supervisors but I've worked for a lot of people who could do neither. Some have more opportunities. The problem with the preconceived ideas is that once we label people we pigeonhole ourselves as well. Few think out of the box we grew up in and the culture and environment we experienced.

Talking people out of bad association when it's all they knew growing up is almost impossible. Not just race or gangs, all of us. Look at alcoholism, drugs, crime, cheating on your mates, working constantly while the kids grow up as latch key children. All by-products of this culture, the American Dream. Fulfilled or otherwise. People are so ingrained in their culture and often bad habits many can't possible get away from the simplest vice nor see a better opportunity even when it hits us in the mouth.

All I'm saying is the almost total lack of respect and appreciation for what's ailing us all in all areas of life, in this constant groundhog day is astounding.

Great insightful post - but a bit misleading. In life's economic adventure - Smart people win most of the time and dumb people lose most of the time. Education helps but smart people make it just fine without an education. Most of the millionaire's I know didn't graduate from college - they figured out how to make money with their wits in a country where your wits are all you really need.

The "dumb" professional athlete thing is real and genetic.

I haven't looked all the way through the comments, so if anybody has mentioned Tua's video....he is smart. He knows how to handle money. He lives off his endorsement money and invests/saves his contract money. Much respect. You can tell he was raised well and remembers where he came from.

I was unaware of these videos. Thanks for posting.

You keep talking about "genetic gifts" like its thew only thing it takes for athletes or anyone else to succeed.

It's a part of it but no where close to the deciding factor.Cannot think of a pre athlete or multimillionaire that I know that
didn't bust their arse to get there and obviously had the desire and balls.

The top 5% of my HS class almost ALL went to Ivy League schools and probably 75% ended up as college professors, the state dept or DOJ.

The folks that ended up being the most successful were well rounded, had a good head on their shoulder and many if not most played sports and were very good at it.

I honestly don't think you know or have met or grew up around many pro athletes.
