A guy on my team is in Seminole, right around Tampa. He is 3 miles from the coast and he is choosing to stay.

I’ve asked him to reconsider

3 miles should keep him safe from the surge at least. I'm less than 2 miles off the coast and generally safe outside a direct hit by 4 or 5 based on what I've experienced so far.

I make my final decision tomorrow morning, but right now I'm about 90% sure I'm leaving.

Traffic on 75 seems to be very slow today. Google maps show it yellow and red all the way to 10. Looking at that makes me want to stay home.

I won’t, promise. Don’t want cred. I was talking with another local Florida folk who is 20 miles north of me. I am in construction, working with FEMA to help with storm response along other things. Not everyone can flee, so I’m along side a lot of those who have to stay and help those in need. I won’t ask for any money I assure. I don’t do my job for the money.

Also my wife is a RN at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. We both are here to stay so we can help. Nurses can’t leave patients at the hospital.

Those are all good reasons, but why say "we talked about it and decided to ride it out"? Sounds like there was nothing to talk about. Is your wife staying at the hospital? You have to know you won't be able to get there during or after the storm. Serious question.

Consider going South to Miami.

2 or 3 miles inland is meaningless with a major hurricane. Augusta GA is 260 miles inland from Helene's landfall and is still without power and is devastated, thousands of homes destroyed, many dead people. The media is focused on the insane flash flooding in the mountains, which is horrible, but what Helene did on its way to the mountains isn't being covered. And this hurricane is shaping up to be much stronger.

I'm probably just gonna head north/northwest until I find a room. I expect that to be difficult, but if I get far enough into Alabama I'll just drive the few extra hours and stay with family. If I go south, I could just get stuck.

The latest official update has it tracking a bit further south on the entry and exit of Florida. If that holds, I am more likely to stay home.

Ya'll won't be getting any govt help for this one, even Helene survivors are being stiffed by FEMA because Biden/Harris used all their funding to house, feed and even GIVE PRE-PAID VISA CARDS to illegal immigrants the past 3.5 years.

And no, I'm not making this up, but wish I were. Godspeed to all Floridians.

All of my nephews live in the Tampa area. One is a first responder that can't leave. My sister just bought a house there. She just retired and was moving there in two weeks. She said all the shops and restaurants there were already messed up from the last hurricane. She has to be out of the house they are in within two weeks and she just got COVID. Talk about bad timing.

Unlike a tornado or an earthquake, Hurricanes give you plenty of time to leave. If you are told to evacuate, it is madness to not leave. If you are more inland and high elevation, and not told to leave, then you have to determine if you can handle not having electricity, food and water maybe for a few weeks.

I can’t remember the hurricane that hit south Miami maybe 30 years ago but it killed much more people then was ever reported. One of my buddies was going to ride it but I begged him to take his family and head north. Luckily he heeded that warning. Everyone on his street that stayed perished in that hurricane. When they returned, they couldn’t even tell where their house once stood. Do not try to ride it out if you are told to evacuate. Better safe than sorry.

Hurricane Andrew 30 years ago. It was a cat 5. They said officially like 80 people died but that is bullshite. People that lived in the Homestead area said it had to be thousands of people but many were undocumented. A lot of people lived in mobile homes, stayed and perished. Praying for Florida.

For those that are older and considering staying because you have been through hurricanes before, what you experienced years ago is not what we have now. It's worse. If you have a chance to leave please do, your life may depend on it.

I don't know how to say this in a courteous way; you are a fricking moron. Your wife and kids dude. Get the frick out of there. You have the means to do it, but you want social media cred for "riding it out".

If you survive, I don't want to see you posting on here about relief help or wo is me bullshite.

It may already be too late to evacuate. I saw a report of vehicles stranded on I-75 and I-4 and no gasoline available.

Yeah. Looks like folks are heeding the warnings. We got family in Naples we offered a place to evacuate to. But, they’ve got a whole home generator & hunkering down.

good; the rescue team can follow the trail of the bubbles.
