I know. I was too.
But I think you have Baton Rouge all wrong.
Most of its crime and bad areas are in Scotlandville - north of BR.
Baton Rouge actually has quite a lot going for it.
Its economy is one of the best in the South, it has a very busy downtown/financial sector, some of the most beautiful municipal parks, golf courses and zoos in the country, great historical districts, wonderful museums like the USS Kidd WWII battleship memorial and the Old State Capital museum, gorgeous State Capital grounds, bustling retail, music, restaurant, casino, and tourism industries, national attractions like the Miss USA Beauty Pageant (for the last 2 years), the National Hot Air Balloon show and competition, the Mall of Louisiana, beautiful gated communities and subdivisions, not to mention the gorgeous campus at LSU.
It is also the largest city in Louisiana.

I know it's not a dump. I just don't like the huge city feel of it. But LSU's location is so far from downtown, it doesn't have the South Carolina or Tennessee feel to it: where at times you don't even know if you're on campus. I also had no idea Baton Rouge was the biggest within the city limits. Over 200k more than New Orleans, although the NOLA metro is bigger.

Lexington is really a nice.
It's laughably underrated on tRant. Two (main) reasons:
1) people haven't been there
2) people seem to expect that it will conform to their notions of what a college town wil/should be like. The best things are not adjacent to campus, it's a city in its own right. This freaks people out on here for some reason.

Ok this I agree with. It's all in each person's preferences. It is within a 5 minute ride to downtown on Nicholson Drive though.
Now that you mention it, a huge renovation and rebuilding of the Nicholson Drive Corrider from Walk-On's near campus to the Capital and Downtown area will start in the near future.

The 350+ year old burr oak south of Columbia: during the flood of '93 it stood in about nine feet of water for close to a month.

Baton Rouge and CS have to be 2 of the worst places to live below the Mason Dixon Line. frick that....
Gainesville is an absolute shithole.

I'm not arguing that your subdivisions and/or gated communities are not themselves attractive. I'm laughing at the fact that nouveau riche McMansions are what you're selling.
Edit to add: the was kind of harsh, and the original comment was meant to be more in good fun. I'll just say different strokes for different folks.

I don't know of anyone else to call Gainesville a shite hole. Yeah, it's not Princeton or Oxford (and nowhere near State College for that matter), but it's not terrible. It's just an incredibly average town

what does State College and Oxford have that Gainesville doesn't?

Used to visit my uncle and aunt when they lived there. Hated the city. I'd say that average is being overly complementary. There are some nice places to visit not far from it, but Gainesville itself offers little.

state college way too cold to be charming.
the pics I've seen of Gainesville/UF seem similar to Oxford.
