The situation that seems more intriguing—but may not be—is the one at Clemson. On Monday, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney named freshman Trevor Lawrence the starting quarterback for the Tigers’ game against Syracuse on Saturday. Lawrence supplanted senior Kelly Bryant, who has gone 16–2 as Clemson’s starter since last season. On Tuesday, Swinney said his Monday meeting with Bryant was very emotional. Swinney also said he gave Bryant the day off practice—which prompted more questions about whether Bryant might leave.

quote:

And if Bryant decided he wanted to leave, Swinney would understand. “Certainly if he walked in here today and said, ‘Hey Coach, I don’t want to play the rest of the year unless you’ve got to have me,’ well O.K., if that’s what you want to do I’m all for it. I love Kelly,” Swinney told reporters Tuesday. “I would be disappointed in that because we need him. But I wouldn’t judge him for that.”

quote:

But Swinney doesn’t think Bryant will leave. “If I was worried about that or if I was deceitful in some way, I could have held the coaches up and said, ‘Let’s make sure we start him for Syracuse. That way he’s got no option,’” Swinney told reporters. “I don’t think like that. I don’t operate that way.”

I heard Dabo was up for a 1 for 1 trade with Bryant and Hurts.

Contingent of course on taking over for Saban after he retires 20 years from now.

Don't even start the cam Newton, Nick Marshall comparisons.

Not in the same stratosphere. Bryant at best is mediocre.

I imagine Bryant and Lawrence still take similar amount of snaps as they have been. I think Dabo is looking to score faster than they have been in the first few drives when using Bryant. Kelly's going to play a lot the rest of the season and is only an injury away from having to pull the weight again. I don't see a reason to transfer. It's not like he's a NFL prospect.

The truth is that Lawerence was prob. promised to be the starter this year before he even stepped foot on campus.

Yeah if you think this is true, you haven't followed Clemson recruiting much.

Tajh Boyd just did a great interview where he talked about how Dabo did the opposite of every other coaching staff out there (including Ohio State and UT) and explicitly said he wouldn't promise him that he would start.

Who is their 3rd string if Lawrence gets hurt and Bryant transfers? Johnson and Cooper both transferred.

And now it is being reported Bryant did not practice today, either. He gone.

Have no idea. With the rest of Clemson's schedule, Bryant will still get a decent amount of playing time. I don't think they will have to worry about that situation.

Thank you for recognizing the analogy. Seemed appropriate for the time.

There are some real shite holes he could end up in the pursuit of being the BMOC...I hope he thinks this out.

I'm starting to see a connection here. Dabo was an insurance salesman before Clemson hired him, qbBarbie is a caveman and they promote Geico insurance. Collusion, I tell ya.
