Portal tracking is funner than recruit tracking

Disclaimer: I think money isn’t the issue its unlimited transfers killing the sport. You should get one free transfer and your second transfer should cost a sitting year.
Recruiting still has value, over 50% and likely in the 50-60% range. Portals can be great but you still need continuity for schemes and culture. Schools with heavy portal use must make great choices year after year without many busts. Not sustainable.
I love the portal season more than recruiting. Reason being is recruits are HS players and you are looking at potential and relying on folks who follow it year round who also have interest in promoting some as higher. You gamble on potential.
Portal transfers are so much funner because you can look at their actual playing in college level. So much easier to imagine how a portal can look in your system. Less guessing how they pan out compared to HS.
You will have busts, some took the bag and stopped working. But most want to find playing time or a place that can make them better. Stepping down can make them better with more playing time.
But its a lot funner than the days where it was only recruits and you had to hope they panned out, sometimes after 2-3 years of mostly sitting and learning. Now you can get instant portal production if you can properly blend them into your schemes and culture.

This. It seems like a simple fix.....

1st time transfer is free
2nd time must sit a year
Allow grad transfers and/or players who coach left them without penalty
Have transfer portal after season (It's the stupidest fckin thing to have signing day and transfer portal open while teams are still playing)

It’s fun for teams who have realized its importance. Plenty still mostly ignore it.

It sounds super simple. But of the top 10 ranked transfer portal classes from last season, 4 had losing seasons and failed to even make a bowl game, 2 regressed by at least 2 wins from the previous season, and the remaining 4 made the playoffs.
So it seems there is a little more to it than simply spending a ton of money to acquire a highly ranked transfer class.

Unfortunately they will need to find a fix that won't get struck down by the courts.

Pay the players, create contracts. That's how the rest of the world works.

The are going to hold onto the "amateur" model for as long as they can realistically delude themselves that it still applies.

You need a GM and full staff just for recruiting/portal. OU went to this model 2 years ago and its paying off. Jim Nagy ran NFL Pro Bowl stuff and has a knack for finding talent that can go to NFL and that helps us. He can ID talent regardless of their ranking. If any team hasn’t done this they are way behind. The key is they have to work with coaching staff to understand needs and priorities and helping manage the costs. Its full blown NFL lite, except its actually more evals needing done than NFL since they have contracts and less turnovet.

Good for him, they are idiots for kicking him aside arrogantly thinking they were going to improve his spot through the portal

This is already happening...and courts will still strike any restrictions on players.
Lets be real, most players are black and every judge out there is tripping over his or her robe to align themselves with "the struggle"

Not a bad idea. Its hard for me to keep up today, OU has picked up 6 portals just today and 1 last night. Our GM has been a busy beaver.
