For the record, I don’t want to be thought of as the Harvard of anything.

Great question. My sister’s lived in suburban Columba for 30 years so I have a feel for what Columbia’s about, but I’m not sure how that translates to Gamecocks fans. Responsible and laid back, big into golf, not gonna talk football too much, probably more interested in other sports. Am I close at all?

This is two threads I’ve seen you in discussing the supposed “superiority” complex rampant among the Ole Miss fanbase. It’s okay to be upset, but why don’t you try and get to know us before painting with such a broad brush?
So it's possible that I call Ole Miss fans out for being Ole Miss fans in other threads. In other news, Man Walks on the fricking Moon.

One might assume the MSU fanbase is nothing but fat, overall wearing, dipshite rednecks wearing Justins.
None of which is pretentious.
Now, if they saw a bunch of dudes getting out of their leased luxury cars or F-250s in skinny jeans and red pants with ascots, on their way to sip white wine with their pinky out while sitting under a chandelier, you might have a point.

A metric ton of Ole Miss students are from Atlanta.
I know from my children's friends that they get a significant amount from the 'burbs of Bham (Vestavia, Mtn Brook, etc.).
A lot of that has to do with the surprising amounts of scholly money both schools will offer to out of state students with decent test scores. Not by much, but would have cost me less to send daughter #3 to either Ole Miss or MSU -- she took a hard look at both -- than Auburn (who is very chintzy with the scholly money, TBH).

So if there is a startling lack of diversity at Ole Miss what would you see at State considering that the two schools basically have near identical ethnic enrollment???
Just because you say this doesn't mean it's true. Mississippi State has a significantly larger minority enrollment than Ole Miss, particularly African American enrollment. State's is over 16% while Ole Miss's is a little less than 12.

This is all you need to know.
After the Civil War, when the Morrill Act was signed that created land grant institutions, the Mississippi legislature wanted to expand the University of Mississippi to include the Land Grant college (this happened in Louisiana).
Students at Ole Miss didn't want farmers at their esteemed institution so the legislature chose an area east of Starkville because of its ample agricultural land. MSU is second only to Texas A&M in campus acreage, but the vast majority of the acreage is farmland.
Ole Miss used to refer to State students as "Bookfarmers" and when football came around, the rivalry was intense. After breaking a losing streak in Starkville, Ole Miss students tried to tear down goal posts and MSU students defended their field, tearing out chairs and beating the Ole Miss students with them.
Then Ole Miss students stole the live mascot and painted it red and blue, resulting in the dogs death. All of this led to the creation of the Egg Bowl trophy, which is still rewarded to the winner today.
State broke a losing streak to Ole Miss after a cow wondered on the field during a game. State started bringing the cow to games, then eventually just the cow's bell - which developed into the cowbell tradition of today.
As others have noted, Ole Miss tends to attract students that come from other states who want to party, and in state legacy students. State attracts the blue collar and first generation college students, mostly from in state but does recruit the Birmingham area very well.
Here's my experience. I dated two girls from Ole Miss. One was from Vicksburg and was a southern belle who worked with pageants cotillions and her sorority and all of that was more important. The other girl was from Indianapolis. She didn't get into IU and wanted to have a big college experience and Ole Miss was the best place for her.
The girl from Vicksburg's family was probably worth a couple hundred thousand. The girl from Indianpolis was worth millions. Its a strange dynamic. The girl from Vicksburg was of average intellect. The girl from Indianapolis was one of the dumbest people I ever interacted with. I broke things off with her because she was so dumb.

We talk football a lot, we just know we suck. So when we trash talk other fanbases and then those fanbases bring up how much we suck by bringing up our entire history (like we don't know what it is), we really don't get it because we know we do... doesn't mean we can't trash talk.

When you go on a campus tour as a prospective student at Ole Miss, the guides will mention where different programs and degrees stack up with other schools from the southeast, and some even from around the nation.
When you go and tour Mississippi State, they will only talk about how this and that is better than at Ole Miss.

My objective opinion as a UGA fan-
I had a "friend" in Oxford for a while, I visited a few times. Outside of football season, no grove or tailgating etc, just random college partying.
The stereotypes are 100% true.
Sure, UGA has the same types around Athens, but at UGA there's a much more balanced distribution of frat-stars, hipsters, rednecks, preps, etc etc. In Oxford, it was much more concentrated in the frat-star/preppy kid category. Big time. The whole place is a setting for some kind of CW teen drama show. Like Riverdale meets Clueless in a small town in the middle of nowhere.
Everyone was nice to me though, the times I went. I didn't have any troubles with anyone. Bars closed relatively early, so it was a decent mix of bar partying with afterhours house partying, which the locals called "late night". I've never heard an afterparty or house party ubiquitously called "late night" in any other town. It's just "we're heading to Jimmy's". There's also a lot of cocaine in that town. Also, you can't buy cold beer at the store. You have to buy it warm then throw it in a cooler with ice so it is cold by the time you get to where you are going. But enough about all that.
Regarding Starkville, I've never been.

Apparently I'm not done talking about 'Late Night'.
The conversation would go
- "hey where yall goin'?"
-"We're goin' to Late Night"
-"Oh cool, where at?"
-"We're going to Jimmy's"
-"Yeah we're going to Late Night too"
-"Where at?"
-"Lizzy and Bella's place"
-OK cool we might stop by later if Jimmy's sucks [code for 'we're just there to score some coke']"
-"K bye!"
Think of how this conversation works in any other town-
"Where yall going?"
"Jimmy's. Yall?"
"Lizzy and Bella's."
"Cool, we might see yall later"
I don't understand all the "Late Night" interjections.

You don't need to. Just a phrase to ask if people are going to continue partying or head home.

Honestly I like State people much better. Down to earth hard working people who are street smart. Ole Miss are a bunch of fratty vineyard vines wearing pussies but they do have some smoking hot chicks in Oxford. So they got that going for them…which is nice.

Cold beer has been for sale in Oxford since 2013.

They do/did in Athens. I guess Athens is a little more dangerous. But, I edited it out at your request, to present a more perfect picture.
