Good, bad or whatever, Arnold is Hugh Freeze's problem this year.

Agree but I think you’ll be very good. OU is a power house program that has owned Texas and the Big 12. I personally hate Oklahoma football ever since you embarrassed us in the Sugar Bowl, but you’re also a very scary program when you are rolling.

I just read Steeles power rankings going into 2024, he had OU 7, Florida St 10, Utah 9, Michigan 10, and A&M 12th

Ouch

Going into 2024, Phil Steele had Oklahoma ranked 20th nationally and 7th in the SEC power rankings, not 7th in the nation.

Link: LINK

"Offensively, Jackson Arnold takes over at quarterback, with plenty of weapons at running back and wide receiver. Offensive line and tight end leave a bit to be desired, but if the transfer portal additions at those positions click, Oklahoma could jell on offense."

Seems like he was pretty spot on to me last year but couldn't account for the ungodly amount of injuries in his forecast.

Michigan will go 6-6 and I think OU blows them out. Their coach might be suspended and they have a QB that just turned 18

This is where you are wrong: 1. Michigan had one of the top Ds in the country last year before injuries, those guys are back. They picked up Bryce Underwood, the one QB more hyped than Mateer. Since this thread was started by Phil Steele, he has them ranked #4 in the Big 10. Also, S. Moore IS coaching in the OU game as he comes back to his alma mater.

Nope. Don’t buy the hype. I think we have a pretty good (not elite) defense. I’m not confident in our offense yet. Rational OU fans are in the wait and see approach.

I agree, I think OU has improved at the offensive skill positions, many people forget the truly horrible injury luck they had last year at WR. If they get any production from Mateer and the WR position, and keep that highly touted D off the field a bit more than last year, they will be a tough out.

Due to the schedule, I'd say ceiling is 10-2, floor is 7-5. Realistically 9-3. That Michigan game is going to be a weathervane for the SEC and Big 10, both teams need it BAD to make a statement. I can't wait for Arnold and Auburn to visit Norman.

As for the offense, I don’t think people realize just how many things went wrong last year. It wasn’t just WR’s.

Oline was a hodge podge of young players. Because of bad OC and horrible QB play there was no consistency in what to block for.

QB. Jackson was the #1 QB coming in and all accounts he’d do great. No one knew at first sign of pressure he’d crumble.

RB. With a young OLine and skittish QB they went nowhere.

OC. This was a disaster, one of Brents bad decisions. His schemes did not play into a freshman QB. OC had so many long developing play calls and Arnold folded under pressure. OC could have called plays that better suited the situation (hurt WR’s, young oline, raw QB and unable to throw medium to unclog the box for run. I think this was the crux of our problems.

Fast forward and we have an actual proven OC, more experienced OLine, a proven QB (not in SEC but has years of playing experience) and healthy WRs. The schemes Arbuckle uses will utilize TE and other weapons all over the field.

Its not even comparable the difference last year to now. Still have to prove it on the field. But if they can move the chains it will jeep our defense more rested. If they can score and get leads it will allow Brent to gamble more and unleash the defense to be aggressive. They should compliment each other.

Last year I only enjoyed watching defense play

This is the one big question mark this year too, got some good young talent, and some portal players, but if this group doesn't really improve, it will be another very long year.

I look for a big jump on oline. Existing players learned under fire vs SEC. Transfers. Also, I didn’t mention getting RB Ott. He will make a big difference. I can’t think of any area our offense didn’t improve. Which will help our stout defense.

People don’t get what it was like for OU last year … Sec people thought it was the sec that did OU over and while it didn’t help it had no bearing on why OU finished the way they did . OU at seasons end was down their 6 best WRs and had a diffferent OL hurt every week. Pair that was inexperienced qbs evens an elite defense and that’s what OU had last year was an elite defense.

OU played the toughest or second toughest schedule in the country and will again this year . Last year OU faced Bama LSU Ole Miss after bye weeks . OU had to play Bama and LSU back to back . I watched both games and Vs LSU OU looked tired . That’s what happens when every single team you played inside top 15 has a bye week before you play them. This year even with the hardest schedule in country OU has a more manageable schedule to start.

And don't forget Ott. Huge addition to the backfield. He'll put up big numbers.
