That's the biggest headscratcher.

My sister is a sophomore and her pledge class has multiple kids from Metro Chicago, LA, NYC, Denver and tons from DFW, Charlotte and of course Atlanta. And all of those kids had really, really good grades/scores/etc.

They've been pounding the pavement in bigger places with really difficult in-state admits.

they've also upped the benefits for the better qualified students.

Yep. Witt did work the last 10 years in terms of the profile of the University and the facilities.

However, I will be curious to see when the backlash arrives re: all the OOS kids and the size of the student body. It's coming.

Yup. We have a considerable amount of kids from Texas, but there's a pretty large drop off of other states. I'd say Georgia is the second most represented state at LSU, followed by Florida

Bama goes hard after Florida students. I know a couple of people locally who get offered lots of scholarship money to go there.

UF doesn't really have many OOS. Just Florida and some Georgia.

I know when I was graduating LSU and OU offered instate tuition to TX kids who met certain qualifications. I think I've read on here that OM Arkansas and maybe Bama do the same. That's a pretty good setup honestly, I would rather go to any of those schools than Texas Tech or TX State or UNT. shite most of those schools are closer to the Houston metro than Lubbock is

Yep - they have been really trying to get high achieving kids from lottery states with hard admits like Texas, Florida and Georgia who either don't get scholly money at the state school or are on the edge of getting in.

It's raised the upper level of incoming student drastically the last 7-10 years. The bottom level is still pretty low because it's a big state school in a pretty poorly educated state, but that won't (and probably shouldn't) ever change.

What kind of reaction do you expect?

LSU has VERY low tuition rates for OOS students. I think it may even be lower than the cost of in-state tuition in Texas.

Won't be true much longer. Has went from $9,000 per semester to $13,200 per semester in my time here. They're raising it as quickly as they can.

are legacy students the only one who can get in, for the most part?

When I applied in 2005 there was no questions/sections about being a legacy at all. I seem to recall them removing that stuff from the application a few years prior for in state and out of state.

Honestly I didn't know many legacies at A&M. I was the only one in pretty much all of my social groups.

I'm not sure. But I think the possible negative to this approach is that kids come over from Dallas or Denver, go to school and have fun, move back to Denver and never really give back money to the University, athletic department, etc etc.

I don't necessarily think that will happen, but I have heard others express that fear.

UGA has a decent oos population. I think it's around 15%.

Top ten states
1. Texas
2. North Carolina
3. Florida
4. Virginia
5. Tennessee
6. Maryland
7. South Carolina
8. California
9. Illinois
10. New Jersey

Lots of Charlotte kids at UGA aren't they? Comparatively I guess. I feel like every other time I do business with a UGA grad they are originally from Charlotte.

It's an interesting method. It'll pay dividends when those students graduate and become professionals. There's a good chance of those students of boosting up endowment.

Meh, Alabama is a small state with several good universities. When you upped your enrollment so much, you limited your qualified applicant pool, they had to go elsewhere

I totally agree.

Auburn historically had more OOS kids (mostly Georgia) and that hasn't hurt their retention rate (as far as giving back and the like). I don't think it's an issue.
