Pct of losses by 7 points or fewer since 2009
1. Alabama 69.2% (9 of 13)
2. Georgia 56.4% (22 of 39)
3. LSU 50.0% (16 of 32)
3. Texas A&M 50.0% (24 of 48)
5. Arkansas 40.3% (25 of 62)
6. South Carolina 38.8% (19 of 49)
7. Tennessee 36.5% (23 of 63)
8. Missouri 35.3% (18 of 51)
9. Auburn 34.8% (16 of 46)
10. Mississippi St 33.3% (17 of 51)
11. Ole Miss 31.7% (19 of 60)
12. Florida 31.1% (14 of 45)
13. Kentucky 30.4% (21 of 69)
14. Vanderbilt 30.1% (22 of 73)

*Only 7 Power 5 teams have had more 7-point losses over the last decade than Arkansas. Want to talk about this Arkansas fans? Any serious heart-breakers in there?

*Syracuse and Alabama both have 9 losses by 7 points or fewer - fewest such losses in Power 5 since 2009. The contrast of actual on-field success makes this somewhat interesting.

*Florida has the 4th-fewest losses since '09. But when they lose, they make sure there was never any doubt, losing by 8+ points 69% of the time (2011, 2013, and 2017 inflate these numbers a bit).

Also, since we have this data out, let's extrapolate how many losses each team has had by 8 points or more and put it in an ordered list as well, shall we?

Total losses by 8 points or more since 2009
1. Alabama: 4
2. LSU: 16
3. Georgia: 17
4. Texas A&M: 24
5. South Carolina: 30
5. Auburn: 30
7. Florida: 31
8. Missouri: 33
9. Mississippi St: 34
10. Arkansas: 37
11. Tennessee: 40
12. Ole Miss: 41
13. Kentucky: 48
14. Vanderbilt: 51

Let me know of any errors. Not driving, so there should be fewer.

Would be curious to see these numbers for elite teams in other conferences, specifically OSU and Clemson. Bama’s is staggering

One thing to LSUs credit.. rarely do we get blown out. Outside of Bama , who blows teams out on the regular. The last actual blowout was against Auburn in 2014. And state two years ago.

Bama's 4 losses being Clemson, Ohio State, South Carolina, and Oklahoma (sugar bowl)?

edit:swap Ohio State with Auburn. Blocked that one out.

We have 22 blown 4th quarter leads since 2012 which leads the NCAA. Bert was notorious for it.

It's like a catch-22. We were good enough to lead in a ton of games for nearly the entire game but not good enough to win

Damn close. Take out Ohio State (technically a 7-point loss) and add Auburn in '17

Yea we actually had a throw to the end zone from the 40 or so to try and tie against Ohio State. Zeke scored to go up 14, we scored with like 2 minutes left and then Urban for some reason that still makes no sense threw the ball and stopped the clock on like 3rd and 14 from midfield and we got it back with like 50 seconds left.

Urban is that 11-year old on Madden who loses to the computer after going for it on 4th and 19 on his own 8 up 2 with 1 minute left. Then cries and says the game cheats and quits... seen later eating pizza in the garage.

Interesting.

A deeper look at some recent data:

Pct of losses by 28 points or more in 2019:
1. Alabama 100% (1 of 1)
2. Every other FBS team 0% ( 0 of all)

Pretty incredible how many close games he lost.

Petrino seemed to find a way to win the close ones, while Bert had a knack for losing them (unless it was Ole Miss).

A good kicker had a lot to do with that.

Crazy how something small like that can make a huge difference in a coaching tenure.

Now take this with a grain of salt (realized time stamps on my play-by-play data is a bit messy at the moment), but your stat piqued an idea...

Since 2012 Arkansas has lost 8 games when leading with under 5 minutes left. Only 2 teams have more in the nation (ISU & PSU)

You can't have a soul crushing loss if you're already getting blown out.

So ridiculous - particularly in this day and age of offense in college football. Alabama has truly been blown out 1 time in the last 10 years.

I'm sort of shocked we didn't lead the nation. Bert was terrible with close games in the 4th quarter. There were many games we should have won, but didn't because he did something stupid. When he didn't pull something stupid, we actually won a few big ones.

You losers can't even lose well. If you go out...go out with a bang...by 30.
