The clock is ticking on the “Ole Miss” name.
It’ll blow up suddenly as a controversy, and douches like Shep Smith will plead once again with fans to let it go.
Ten years from now the phrase “Ole Miss” will be taboo in US English. It’ll be “the O word” or something like that.
I’m not saying it’s right. I’m saying it’s coming.

People see the tiger and think it's just another generic mascot though. It's not as readily associated to the civil war as the Col. wearing a confederate uniform.
Glad we got rid of the Colonel. I was ok with the bear and much preferred that to the dumbarse shark we have now. I'd rather us have no mascot but It's another image they can use for merchandise sales.

I think "Ole Miss" sticks around. It's in reference to the river and the sate that bears the same name. It's not named after some plantation owner's wife despite what the state fans will tell you.

It's obviously a double entendre with the plantation owner's wife and "Rebels" narrowly beat out "Ole Massas." Time to banish all these relics of the Lost Cause. Mississippi Black Bearsharks seems acceptable to me.

The “Ole Miss” of the plantation was by far the most important person in Mississippi. She made the plantation system run smoothly.

The issue (which applies to practically everything) is each generation is 1 step further away from it. So what is/was important to you doesn't mean as much to your children...which wouldn't even cause your grandkids to blink.
Sorry, but you can't hold on to everything forever. Hell, look @ life the way your parents & grandparents grew up & I'm sure you have no opinion on something that was important to them.

It's funny how they want the South to get rid of the name "Rebels", but northerners can boast "Yankees"?

Please show me a "Confederate uniform" in these pix!

I read an interesting article (given its in a friendly source to OM) about a scholar with degrees from Millsaps and OM Law with a Ph.D. from Vanderbilt and winner of six grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities who has published works on Faulkner and Lincoln that suggests the likely source of the name is from a W.C. Handy song called “Ole Miss Blues” about a train. Google ole Miss names after train and it comes up.
Not saying it is the correct answer but for those interested in this sort of thing, there is compelling research that was done and is worth the read.

You say it's a good article and most of the crap it's crying about is old and already changed.
You literally posted that entire article because of a single line in it.

He is a perfect example of the problem we have in this country right now. Folks are only interested in parroting their own echo chamber with shaky info to back them. I wish he would look up that article about the train origin and at least say what he thinks about it. He doesn’t have to agree with it but at least look at another opinion. Hell Im not sure I agree with it but it is interesting at least. Also I don’t think he is an LSU Tiger either. LSU fans are better than that. I think he is a MSU bull dawg shite-eater.

If you'd ever lived in MS or seen them try to spread BS about the Funes case on social media you wouldn't be saying that. U of Miss deserves a Mizzou type shitstorm. Absolute scum of the earth

You are right Skwatch. I don’t give a crap. In fact I can’t be more tired of all this crap. All sides. Shouldn’t have even addressed it. I just want to go to a football game without any of that crap, no flaggers, no anti-flaggers, no politics, no crazies using my school as their platform, no State psychos going way above and beyond to hurt their rival because they feel some kind of inadequacy. Just college football.

Even though their entitled prick fans are the worst, I support the “Ole Miss” brand to remain in tact as much as possible. Colonel reb the colors the name and all. It’s a classic SEC brand that should never change. You don’t like it, then go to the PC12.

Auburn's Band plays "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and the words are changed to "Glory, Glory to 'Ol Auburn". UGA's band does a similar thing. (Isn't Battle Hymn of the Republic Georgia's fight song?) We currently have a professor that refuses to say "War Eagle" because the Eagle came from the Battle of the Wilderness during the Civil War. I just love liberal snowflakes!

Go ahead and sympathize with "people" who would never reciprocate then. I respect most fanbases, but UM is the shite i clean off my shoes. Hiving lived there and experienced their obsessive inferiority complex both in person and on social media, I wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire and hope everything bad happens to those bitches
