UM has gotten rid of any Rebel type mascots and any rebel-flag manipulation logos but we all know that's not gonna be enough. Despite funny claims to the contrary, "Ole Miss" was a term of endearment used by slaves to refer to the plantation owners wife, the "Ole Massa" (UM's first official team name was almost the Ole Massas instead of the Rebels).

With "Rebels," the best chance for preserving it might be embracing Star Wars and having Admiral Ackbar as mascot

I was already doing my part by never using OM or Rebels to troll them... I say that by 2025, both nicknames will be abandoned.

Didn't they already change to the Landsharks?

They will never not be the Rebels to me.

I miss hearing From Dixie With Love.

The mascot is a shark, but the moniker is still Rebels and they object to being called "Mississippi"

Google is your friend. Like I said, they almost named their team the "Ole Massas," not much plausible deniability there

They have already said that the university itself is not Ole Miss. It is the University of Mississippi. Only athletics is known as Ole Miss. That's the official stance from the university. I shite you not.

Also I find it funny that other fanbases point out how racist Ole Miss is and how the name itself is racist. But if the school were to try and get rid of it, they would be called pussies giving into the liberals. Just like what happened with Colonel Reb

Clarification: The U. of Miss. started playing sports in 1893. From then to 1936, they were called the Mississippi Flood. Yes.

There was a contest in 1936 to change the name for some reason. Rebels won. The colors navy blue and cardinal red were adopted from Harvard and Yale. Yes.

The official mascot of the university is now Tony the Landshark. Tony from the death of a former football player.

There is no plan to change from the Ole Miss Rebels in sports competition. I call our teams either the Ole Miss Rebels or Ole Miss Lady Rebels.

Yep it's like how UL-Lafayette says "Louisiana" is used for athletics only (they have Louisiana.edu though). I don't really care myself, but I want to see yall feel some more woke wrath out of spite, couldn't happen to better people

LSU does not recognize ULL as the University of Lousiana. They recognize them as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Just as they recognize ULM as the University of Louisiana at Monroe. These replaced USL and Northeast La.

Bring back colonel rebel. That mascot was cool. But the happy looking shark is stupid.

On a side note, Fort Smith Southside high school in Arkansas used to be called the rebels and had a mascot that looked like the colonel. But like anything else, they changed the mascot to the stupid and boring name of mavericks. Well support fell rock bottom and the football teams went to shite.

BTW, I see no conflict between having a mascot that is different from the nickname of the university. Case in point: U. of Alabama Crimson Tide and Al the Elephant.

I know that. They're officially UL at Lafayette, but they use the "it's athletics only" loophole (quite successfully) to promote themselves as "Louisiana"

We can't because other schools used it to negativity recruit against us. As soon as we got rid of Colonel Reb our talent skyrocketed

The faculty already use University of Mississippi (not Ole Miss) in their communications, conference presentations, grant applications, journal articles, email signatures, etc.

I was at the 2005 LSU at UM game (CEO's first season in Oxford), the Colonel was in the grove, just not the stadium. The band played "Dixie" but I think during commercial break
