OU and Michael Hawkins, JR

Last night, the Pokes beat West Virginia.
Michael Hawkins, JR, formerly the QB at OU, is the starting QB for WVU now.
While he isn't currently a great passer, his rushing is dynamic.
Granted, he wasn't facing UGA's defense, but he looked to be much more of a threat than Mateer, and at this point, he looks to have a higher top end than Mateer will have.
For the OU fans, do you agree, and are you regretting your choice?

It wasn't our choice..... It was the decision of Hawkins, Venables, and Arbuckle.

They should’ve never of ran off Dillon Gabriel for Jackson Arnold. It’s been all down hill since then.

Not a choice from the fans, in response to your question. Fans had nothing to do with it.

Mateer would perform the same in Morgantown against Big 12 competition.
Both he and Hawkins would struggle against defenses like Georgia, Michigan, etc
Neither one is good enough to be OU qb if the goal is to be top-tier.

Dillon left on his own accord to Oregon to be closer to his home (Hawaii). He would have beaten Jackson Arnold in preseason competition, but with this coaching staff, it probably wouldn't have mattered.
At OU as an NIL QB, you can turn the ball over 4 plus times causing game changing mistakes and still not get benched.
There's zero accountability and not every position is held to the same standards.

We liked Michael a lot. But many of us didn't think he was SEC qb material. I still believe that. (Mateer isn't either, unfortunately.)
Hawkins was doing well in the Big 12 this year until a brand-new Ok State team beat him 41-24 in his own stadium. Now, maybe people will pipe down about him.
However, I'm in the minority because there are a TON of OU fans who thought he walked on water. I never did, personally. He's more of a running back or slot receiver in my book.

I think you may still be having issues understanding that the choice was not made by the fans.

We can put the shoulda kept Hawkins talk away. He is a running qb that is truly looking to run first. His passing was bad in first conf game when facing a breathing defense. We saw him last year and against the defenses we play he would be no better than Mateer. He might run better but oir standard needs to be higher.

I really like this kid he’s an OU legacy. But he felt he should start here and knew Mateer would so left.

Hindsight is 20/20 but yes. Hawk was a true freshman and had incredible athleticism. Bad bad coaching.

I truly thought that Mateer's play at the end of last year was due to his injury. I expected him to be very good this season.

As mentioned it was not our choice. In retrospect everyone gave Mateer a pass last season due to hand injury, he was bad after that. But this years results are not good either. Right now Hawkins is #6 rated in QBR , Mateer is #70 rated. LINK
Yesterday it was TOs that Mateer did that was so extremely bad….maybe as much as a 28 point swing…
They are very different dual threats, Hawkins is quick and fast running with a good arm. Mateer is good passing but not quick running. Arbuckle and Mateer were a package deal when we got them.

The injury didn’t help, but the LSU game was very telling. Just horrible decision making and zero ability to read obvious defense schemes.

In Hawkins defense, he threw several bombs that were right on the money, but the receiver dropped the ball. I know that's part of football, but if his receivers make the catch than it may be a different game.

Was it Tennessee or South Carolina where Michael Hawkins had 3 turnovers in the the first 3 possesions of the game and OU was down 21-0 five minutes in. He sucks too.

Every player has those moments, even the good ones. Hawkins isn't beating Georgia but might have beaten the Wolverines.
