They get fewer penalties because the refs feel sorry for them and/or are trying to help them.
No way that happens year after year like that unless it's on purpose.

One alternative theory to keep in mind, is that at least for Alabama, you are relatively speaking almost every team's super bowl during the regular season... LSU, Auburn, etc... Every one of those teams knows that playing Alabama means it will require exceptional execution and minimizing self inflicted wounds. Not to say that zero penalties happen, but you probably do see a smaller amount of just pure dumb penalties committed.
You might be on to something but I would be more apt to believe if so many teams didn't appear to crumble 15 minutes in.

As I said... I don't watch Alabama games on the regular, so really can't say one way or the other. Was simply offering up another logical explanation as to why there may be a discrepancy there.
Out of curiosity, I took a look at the same list sorted by penalties/game instead of penalty yards/game:
LINK
Alabama comes in at 53. So opponents are getting penalized this year (last year and year before you were in the 120s), but it's more small shite it would seem.
Georgia sitting at 2nd from the bottom on this list as well... so no love from the zebras period in 2018 for us...

Another theory is that Bama is infinitely more talented than almost every team they play, so it stands to reason that the other team would have to hold, commit PI, jump offsides trying to time it too closely, and generally commit more penalties than usual.
But, they don't get flagged.

Let me know when you have a streak like this:
2017 - 130 out of 130 teams
2016 - 128 of 128
2015 - 102 of 128
2014 - 123 of 128
2013 - 89 of 125
2012 - 108 of 124
2011 - 117 of 120 ...
... or play 6 SEC teams in a row coming off of byes.

Total penalties or penalty yards per game?

your logic is flawed. If you pay the refs to turn a blind eye to all penalties, including your own, of course there will be fewer penalties called on both sides every game.
Omg..

Bruh...
If we paid the refs to turn a blind eye to both teams it would negate the entire point.

To be fair, the current stink is about a sketchy confirmed targeting penalty with suspension.

you jackasses sure are sensitive about the favoritism Sankey and the SEC affords UAT in football.
Must be something to it.

I've been waiting on this thread from a bama fan. It's troll time.

I think a decent part of that stat is that once Bama gets up by four scores or more, the refs just don't give a frick and start letting things slide. If anything this stat just shows bama's dominance more than any bias against them.

and yeah, I'm pretty bored at work today. Always nice when end of quarter arrives and you've already closed all the big deals in the works.

For reference, here are the other two big 6 schools...
If you look at it on a ranking basis, it is pretty clear that Tennessee has the biggest advantage, with zero years ranked in the 120s, however, the difference between UT's ~72 average ranking and UGA/Auburn/UA coming in around 100ish is less than 10 yards/game. It's not insignificant, in that it's a trend over 10 years, but on the upside, the effect should be minimal in the outcome of games. The more concerning issue might be what is the ratio of penalties called in ranked matchups/games of importance, since this includes garbage games. Unfortunately, I don't really have access to a dataset where I could even begin to figure that out.
Random musing: Auburn has a slightly lower average ranking than both UGA/UA, but slightly more penalty yards/game called against opponents... assuming that's just a byproduct of UGA/UA having abnormally low years in the years where we rank dead last, but not certain.

Since 2008, LSU has had more penalties than Bama 8 times in our matchups (incl NC). Bama more times only in 3.

This certainly has legs for the Bama component... It would be interesting to see a breakdown of penalties called by half against Bama opponents. I can't imagine there are a ton of 4th quarter penalties other than something like a false start.

In an individual game, it's reasonable to make the assertion that one team actually may have committed more penalties than the other (not to say it's always LSU, but that "imbalance" isn't surprising... also, by how many penalties and how many yards in those matchups...) On the other hand, over the course of multiple seasons, you would expect those things to even out a bit more... they simply aren't as you can see above.
