Here is an article from 2013 in which Saban discusses Smart's interview with Auburn and the possible timeline then. It's an interesting detailed look into how they discussed the decision then and Kirby's personal thoughts on it. My guess is this time he feels the same way but will make the decision to leave on Sunday.

"Nick Saban talks about the talk he had last year with Kirby Smart about the Auburn job (7-18-13)"

quote:

What kind of conversation was there between Smart and Alabama head coach Nick Saban at that time?

"I thought it would be a really good opportunity for him," Saban said Thursday

"Kirby’s really, really professional. Kirby said, ‘You’re OK if I talk to them?’

"I said, ‘Absolutely.’

"He said, ‘There’s only one issue. I want to stay and coach in the championship game, and they’re probably going to ask me that question.’

"And I said, ‘I’m sure they will. How do you think you should answer it?’

"And he said, ‘Well, I think I should be loyal to my team, our team and the players that have worked so hard to get us in this position.'

“And I said, ‘Regardless of how that affects the outcome of the decision, I think that’s the right way to approach it because I think there is more credibility in that, more respect in that, and I think everyone will understand that.'”

Was the same thing with Coach Mc and Colorado State.
However, UGA is a lot bigger power than CSU.

We weren't actively recruiting 15 kids that CSU was also recruiting. Same with Herman to Houston.

I think it wouldn't work. I don't see a reasonable way that he can stay at Alabama for all of December and the first 15 days of January.

He can't just ignore UGA the whole time through mid January.

I don't know the particulars regarding practice / prep time leading up to the playoffs, but if he can't be fully committed and involved in the preparation I think it would be best for everyone if we moved on.

The thing for me is that if I'm Alabama, I think I'd want him to move on. No hard feelings, but I don't want an extremely distracted DC gameplanning for me for a playoff run while simultaneously recruiting against me.

Not that Smart would intentionally tank it or anything, but there's only so much time in a day.

And to recruit at UGA quite frankly means recruiting against Alabama. It's just not a situation that would make sense. It's best for him and best for us if he just goes on to UGA and starts his tenure there.

I agree - and the biggest part is that doing his best for UGA, which he should do, requires him to compete against Alabama in recruiting. How can he do that while still preparing for games for Alabama? It's just not a good idea, for anyone.

I think Kirby could game plan and get things done in that way. I think I have more of an issue of him recruiting against us while coaching for us. That doesn't sit right.

That's what I have said all along.. Georgia is too big of a program.. recruiting is a huge deal, even year one. The sooner the better. He needs to be solely focused on recruiting for his new program after this week IMO.

Some have said coaches can work for both schools, but again I don't see how that would work with UGA.. but perhaps it can..

Tough shite.....that isn't our problem. Smart needs to finish out the season with Bama. We have a SECCG and then the playoffs, where if we get to the finals takes us to January 11th. Smart should offer to finish out the season unless Saban agrees with it. Smart and UGA wouldn't want their DC to leave if the shoe was on the other foot.

Coach mac did it...Hell, Saban insisted on finishing out with Miami even though Miami had nothing to play for and Bama had urgent recruiting needs. I love Kirby and everything he has done but will be pissed if he and UGA pull that shite. UGA will be just fine recruit wise.

In any case, I greatly respect Kirby's thoughts on it. That's what you should WANT to hear your next guy say. It will likely be difficult in this situation, but I respect his desire to do the right thing by his players and the Bama program.

Saban insisted in finishing out in Miami?

He left in the middle of the night immediately and announced he was leaving and taking the bama job after he left town.

If UGA has hired Kirby then Bama is no longer Kirby's problem. Correct
