Luke took over a program under sanction, pulled in some solid talent (esp on offense), seemed to have them trending in a positive direction with some good things happening in recruiting & lots of buy-in internally — seriously, a team that had some tough breaks this year was still playing their hearts out through the tail-end of its schedule.

This was a decision based strictly on the optics of their record this year — AD has no finger on the pulse of that program. And they’re buying out his contract at $17M to hire who?

Ole Piss & Miss really did the civil war-sharks in worse than I thought.

Approximately 40 players walked out of the ADs announcement meeting as soon as he started speaking:

“F*** Ole Miss. That’s my quote.”
-Tariquious Tisdale, Rebel DL

Holy smokes.

Their record doesn't reflect it but they were playing pretty hard for Luke. I thought for sure he'd get at least one more year. Don't really understanding firing him now. Maybe they're going to promote Rich Rod?

I have no love for Ole Miss, but firing Luke is a big mistake imo.

I am 100% on the same page with you (and I have no love for Ole Miss)

Yep. Don’t see that going well, but who knows?

$17MM buyout includes MM and Rich Rod. I hope the next coach keeps MM fwiw.

Literally anyone else. Preferably someone who has held a better position than OL coach.

Yeah we went 4-8 and almost a half-dozen losses can be directly pointed to coaching blunders but man the players sure did play hard for the guy.

You guys are drunk off stupidity

Reminder man, this is the SEC. A&M just lost to my Tigers 50-7. The guy they wanted is in his second year.

Orgeron critics said the same thing. Orgeron defenders hung their hat on the fact that the guy was sincerely loyal/passionate about the program, he could recruit, and guys played hard for him.

Sound familiar?

Better hope you don’t wind up like the longhorns did — 4-8 ain’t a good year, but I felt y’all were at least trending positive. Does not make sense to me.

Let’s revisit this when you guys are fielding an average high school team next year.

Transfer portal gonna blow tf up. Plumlee is a take for LSU — Could use another safety.

6-6 in 2017
5-7 in 2018
4-8 in 2019

Nope not trending positive at all.

Of course the Memphis fans are screaming this from the rooftops as we proceed to zero in on the best coach in the history of your program.

Luke was supposed to be the fall guy, he wasn't supposed to scrounge up a 6-6 year.

Then TAMU's current AD took the interim tag off him.

The new AD is has been around Ole Miss athletics for about 25 years, so I think he has a pulse on the program.

When the $17M buyout (and that is for the full staff, not just Luke) can be found in a few days, it shows he is making the move the power brokers want.

Yes this is why we are posting on "SECRant.com"

Ok go talk about that in another thread.

Orgeron

Orgeron had HC experience. Orgeron showed that he could lead a program at SC. He was shunned because who he was and found a spot back at LSU. We aren't discussing Orgeron.

They were. They were much better than their record indicated. But for a few bounces the other way, they'd have a winning record.

I thought so as well.

Others have discussed declining attendance and other financial stuff. How were they looking recruiting-wise (notice, I said "were" because you can bet a lot of those kids are about to bolt)?

Talk about a dumb fricking idea.

Norvell to Ole Miss, Hugh Freeze to Memphis. A true coaching carousel.

I think their issue is looking at their schedule in 2020, a bowl is almost impossible given their current players and staff. Therefore, why wait? I agree he probably deserved another year but realistically 6 games is the ceiling in 2020 and 5 wins is probably doubtful.

First off, was Matt Luke even HC in 2017?

Again, sanctions are just being lifted. He took over under sanction. You give the guy a year.

2019 could have been 6-6 with a couple coin flips just between Cal & Moo.

There are people who see only results, and then there are people who look at the situation in context, performance vs expectation/talent, slowly building talent in a bad situation.

Luke outperformed what I would have expected, and his replacement is going to be inheriting a shite show because of the timing/(righteous) internal reception

Ok... we're not trying to save a 4-8 team in fear that we might go 2-10 next year.
