That was his second collegiate game. Having a history is out of the question.

I guess my biggest problem with the rule is the fact that while this man be true, in real time as fast as it happened do you really think the DB intentionally did this? Maybe throw a flag, but to suspend a guy for a hit that happened this fast and was all reaction seems silly.

Never said it was worthy of a suspension; just said that it should have been a penalty.

I've got the effing video paused at the exact moment he made contact and he clearly hit first with his shoulder right at or below the receiver's shoulder.

Yeah, his helmet did him, too... but, wtf is he supposed to do? Go headless horseman and take his own head off so that his helmet never hits him?

Why? Why should there have been a penalty? It wasn't early. He lead with his shoulder. Why then?

The whole team deserves the death penalty for this blatant disregard for the rules enacted for the safety of collegiate football players everywhere.

Freeze is obviously teaching them to go for the head, and this sort of dangerous coaching shall not stand and he should be made an example of.

To me this shot shows that he wasn't targeting the WR's head AND was leading with his shoulder.

I have the video paused right at the moment of impact. Elston led with his shoulder and hit him square in the chest. This wasn't targeting, this wasn't unnecessary roughness, it was a legal hit on a receiver who was trying to catch the ball for a touchdown.

I applaud Slive for taking action against this brute.

Probably because the safety is young, he is still playing the man instead of the ball. The ball was out of play and the UTEP receiver gave himself up. It was a good tackle, but unnecessary. Penalty yes. Suspension, no.

Did Elston's helmet even touch the facemask of the receiver?

The one thing that does stick out to me is that in the image joe linked (safety is about 3 feet away) the receiver isn't even looking at the ball. That kind of rules out any argument that he was trying to catch it. Granted you can't penalize the safety for the kid being a pussy but if he thought the ball was out of reach then that is a different story.

If a hit like this is now considered illegal, I fear that football may have a short future.

Elston had already committed by that point. The receiver saw him coming and was trying to prepare for the impact.

if the receiver is three feet away from a safety I think its about time to react to him. its clear from being at the game and watching the replay that the receiver was looking for the ball heard footsteps and slowed down. shouldnt punish the defender for doing his job
