If we lose though it makes it worse though. We are playing Texas, Georgia Tech, and Clemson here in the near future. It's not like we are scared to play good teams. Plus by playing those schools, we don't risk getting embarrassed if we lose. And if we happen to win, it would do a lot more for our program image than a win against Southern Miss would.

Not to mention that those games will draw much larger television audiences over wider expanses of geography, meaning more TV money (which benefits the entire SEC, mind you).

Playing a team from your own state doesn't increase your (our) television revenue. Playing schools, especially big schools, from other states does.

No the respect of high school athletes who do not understand any of this. All they understand is records and who-beat-who. And no, they do not understand that USM plays a much easier schedule.

I think you grossly underestimate the intelligence of the average high school athlete.

I'm not sure of this particular situation. I'm sure you can find a few guys on Southern Miss' roster who had Ole Miss or State offers. Still, subtract those few from the team, and you still have 80-something guys who didn't come close to sniffing an SEC scholarship.

This. USM gets 1 or 2 players a year that MSU or OM wants, and that's usually among the 20th-25th players on MSU/OM's lists.

Maybe once every four years or so USM will get a player that would be in MSU or OM's Top 15, and often that player wouldn't qualify for the SEC (DeAndre Brown) or has a specific reason to choose USM--a relative at/from USM, HS coach hired by USM (Alford), etc.

I know they're dumb, but you said they wouldn't even realize that Southern doesn't play anyone, which would mean that they wouldn't know they're in a shitty conference. Everyone near here knows Ole Miss and State are in the SEC, and Southern isn't.

Lose lose situation either way.

This.

Grew up in HB and trust me, id love nothing more than for Ole Miss to play at "The cRock" and there be 20-25k OM fans in there at the very least.

However, the matchup has been put on hold since the 80s because the rivalry got so nasty and honestly their fans hate Ole Miss with the ferocity of a thousand fires. I mean HATE. It got to where it was a lose-lose for OM to play them. There are numerous examples of this throughout the SEC btw.

Ill be the first to say kudos to State for playing them because I'd be all for it.

Playing at USM would mean one less OOC game in Oxford and OM can't afford that. We need every home game we can get. I do think that OM offered at one time to play in Jackson and do a split gate 80/20 or 70/30 but USM turned it down. OM doesn't play USM because they don't won't to play. If they did, they would get their asses on the bus and drive to Oxford just like any other mid-major OOC opponent and go home with a nice check for showing up.

Ill call a spade a spade. USM would have most likely beat us this past season. We had a team who had collectively quit on the rodeo clown running our program. But I see that as no big surprise that they would have won, seeing that this was THE worst OM team ever and USM had one of their best seasons in decades. And even still, we may have beat them.

frick Hardy Street High and to the OP:

L-O-fricking-L @ them joining the big 12. The big 12 should be ashamed if USM is even under the slightest bit of consideration.

No school wants to play Southern in Hattiesburg in a dump stadium in front of 15,000 fans.

The stadium is a dump, but I believe it holds around 35,000 if I remember, correctly.

I remember when ESPN turfed USM to SC in 2010 to make up for UNC postponing their game here. USM fans were surprisingly arrogant and I believe some of them actually thought they could compete in the SEC on a weekly basis, by the time the game rolled around I was more than ecstatic to see SC crush them 41-13, with USM's 1 TD coming against our 3rd string defense.

I expect similar things would happen if they joined the Big 12.

As far as recruiting goes State and Ole Miss sign the majority of the top 30 in state. Southern usually gets 1 or 2 of the top 25 or so. Every once in a while that 1 or 2 might just be a top 3 player in state (Alford, Brown). I can't speak for Ole Miss but I looked at USM's roster from last year and I saw 7....7 players that State showed a lot of interest to, not offered, but showed a lot of interest. Of those 7 maybe 4 had no bullshite offers on the table.

USM wants MSU and UM to play a game in Hattiesburg to help them finance their athletic program. They can only get about 26,000 to show up for their home games. Why should the other two in-state schools leave all that money on the table? It's good business to play those OOc games at home.
