V8 might be coming back
Ben Sulayem pushes V8 return for 2029, calls current engines too complex and costly:
— FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has reignited discussion over a potential return to V8 engines in Formula 1, targeting 2029 as a realistic window. Speaking to journalists at Silverstone, the Emirati leader criticised the cost and complexity of current hybrid units and suggested growing team support for the shift:
“The current engine is so complicated that you have no idea, and it is expensive.”
— Ben Sulayem believes returning to simpler, widely available engine types would help reduce spiraling development budgets and lower car weight, while enhancing fan enjoyment:
“Many manufacturers produce V8s for their cars, so commercially it would be a correct choice. For us the V8 is a reality. With the teams now I’m very optimistic about it.”
— He noted support from Formula One Management and hinted at alignment within the paddock. Highlighting the urgency, he said:
“We have to do it soon… it takes three years, so we hope that by 2029 there will be something.”
— The FIA chief also cautioned about costs beyond engine development, citing fuel and gearbox expenses:
“Fuel is also very expensive and we must be very careful about this aspect. And the transmissions are very expensive.”
— On the possibility of expanding the grid to 24 cars, Ben Sulayem was more reserved, referencing the backlash surrounding Cadillac’s entry bid:
“We are not here to make the other teams angry. We don’t want to do it so much for the sake of doing it… it must be worth it.”
