Well, yeah, it's obvious why they have the rule. In this case its fairly clear that Nkemdiche looks different than Mathers but it's not even close to a silly rule. You can't have different players on offense wearing the same number.
If you've played football you'll know that coaches refer to other players by their number.

Why do all of MSUs uniforms say bulldogs? I know other teams do it as a punishment. Not always the case though so I'm curious
