Old topic, but the Spread Offense

Do you think it's here to stay or do you think that the time will come it goes the way of the triple option/Wishbone attack?

As defenses evolve to deal with it, it'll start to go out of vogue.

The triple option is still effective, I don't understand why people don't use it as much anymore.
I hope it stays because it makes for some exciting football games.

It's going to stay and it's successful for the most part. Texas has won a National Championship with it, Florida has won a National Championship with it, and numerous other teams have shown success running it. The spread is evolving in many high school's as well, that's going to be one of the main component's in it not going away.

because IMO you need three playmakers with speed to make it work
Vick and Dunn ran something pretty similar to option in Atlanta several years ago... with two guys with world class speed it worked at the NFL level

It's not here to stay... Nothing ever is, but neither is the wishbone.

Alabama won 8 SEC titles and 3 national titles with the Wishbone in the 70s. That offense was almost completely extinct by 1990.

the thing is, there is no one, similar spread. spread is just a generic term, but its a constantly evolving offense that is never the same two seasons in a row. You can't really label it like you normally do with say a 1 back offense. therefore, i believe the spread is here to stay.

Ok, you just proved the point, the spread has been here for how long? Not that long, so the prototypical style offense will dissolve before the spread.

as small as some of LSU's defensive ends are, I hope a lot of teams keep it for a while longer!

The pro-style offense is going no where. The spread will fall long before it does. If done right, it's about the most effective offense you can run.

the offense that is winning is what will be run. the spread will be run till people start running the next new thing and winning with it. The pro style offense will probably be the next big thing

Saban has already started to put the nail in the coffin for the spread. Power teams can smash defenses set up to stop the spread (like Alabama's O).

i think its here to stay. Unlike the wishbone the spread is a run or passing attack. I think for that reason and the speed athletes have today the spread will become more of an offense as time goes on. If you line up great athletes on both sides of the ball, i think the (don't know what the offense is going to do?) element wins out. IMO

Parts of it will stay, fwiw for as much as people talk about Alabama running a physical pro style offense, we incorporated a pretty good bit of spread stuff into our offense last year. We ran the pistol, we ran a lot out of the shotgun, etc.

The Pro style offense has been around, well, since pro football made it popular. Alabama ran it in the 60s with Namath and Stabler at QB, but turned to the popular wishbone in 1971. The wishbone ran it's course for the next decade, plus. Then it went out. The pro style offense became more popular again. I see the spread doing a similar thing. We're just in the beginning of its popularity.
