There are conflicting reports on this. Some want to keep divisions because our broadcast partners do not want to lose high-rated games like Michigan vs Penn State. And the late-season division races produce higher ratings on both sides when the winner is to still be decided.
Some want to drop divisions, especially our western teams who want more games with the more prestigious eastern teams. More games of USC vs Ohio State, MU, MSU, Penn State equals higher ratings and more money.
I believe the B1G will watch to see how the ACC, Big 12, and SEC formats work and study it hard, and come up with their own solution.

But seriously, the real reason was the B1G realized how stupid the rule was and changed it so its best, most deserving team went to the playoff.
