Tell me about your experience in Knoxville/this ranking, I'm genuinely interested. My time there I thought it was a little dumpy outside of the strip..no flame. I had fun there.

I just thought it was a nice, clean city. Felt like a mini Chattanooga with the river going downtown and the mountains surrounding the area. Nothing stands out from a restaurant/entertainment standpoint, but I enjoyed it.

I don't know why, but every year around this time, my hands get awfully dry. I'm guessing it's the change of the seasons.

Lotion is still not used because that's not a substance for men.

That's b/c many hand lotions contain alcohol, which dries the skin.
Try some mineral oil or a petroleum-based product.
You'll be better in no time.

If you like the outdoors there's no better place in North MS than Noxubee Wildlife Refuge, right next to Starkville.

Nonetheless, only State College folk will truly argue that Starkvegas = Oxford, in almost any aspect.

Seriously, Google "top college towns" or "best college towns" and see how many lists Oxford pops up on as compared to Starkville.

Numberwang, what you say is the truth.
For whatever reason, Oxford has developed a reputation--largely from people who've never spent much/any time there, that flat-out baffles me.

Oxford has the Square--same as the drinking/restaurant districts in most other college towns.
That's it.
The restaurants that many Ole Missers brag about are average at best (many of the braggarts are either college kids or folks from towns smaller than Oxford, so I guess it makes sense).
Outside of The Square is a run-down town with a Wal-Mart, an IHOP, and little else.
Want to buy beer and bourbon?
You'll have to make two stops (by law, the two can't be sold in the same place).

The place feels like going back in time, 30 years or so--and not in a charming way.
It's a slow town that's been left behind, as evidenced by the folks in Oxford (and Mississippi as a state) who resist change like cats resist baths.
Part of that is the poverty (many places in town without street signs, curbs, fences, street lighting, etc.); part is the culture.
Oxford the town tries like heck to distance itself from its county, Lafayette (the schools are separate and not equal).
The dichotomy is odd and evident.

I can completely understand how/why 17- to 22-year-olds would love the place--it's its own bubble.
And I'll give Oxford this: They've managed to convince a bunch of people that it's a great place.

Very little of this is accurate.....as some one who has lived in the town for 20 years. If you don't like the town I am perfectly fine with that...but at least know what you are talking about, That is all.

I'm sorry but I've been to Auburn twice. Not impressed. It's a major university that sneaks up on you and is out of place.

Baton Rouge pretty much sucks though outside of good food and being close to New Orleans. The town itself has an awful lot of really rough areas though.

As a college kid, I'll take casinos, a lax alcohol culture, a wide variety of bars, good food, LSU tailgating, and like you said proximity to New Orleans over B/CS any day of the week as well as many other SEC cities.

Baton Rouge has a ton of potential, but underachieves because the town has grown further and further out. Downtown is growing, Spanish town, garden district, and Perkins overpass are great places. Once they develop that one mile dump between the North Gates and Downtown, it will be a really cool place.

Private interests drove downtown revitalization, and the Nicholson corridor will be great, but BR will continue to suffer from white flight.

I'm kinda embarrassed that the most visible restaurant and bar near campus is walk ons and Fred's. North Gate offers much better food and drinking.

If we stuck LSU area and downtown in th middle of nowhere it would be a cool town, but the rest of the city just drags us down.

Except a downtown area that big wouldn't be there without a city the size of Baton Rouge. There are other nice things to BR besides LSU.

The media is like a constituent of OM. They have graduates that are journalists and media people working behind the scenes, as well as a pumper on the largest news network constantly hounding for exposure and recognition of all things OM. The bias shown from the Jackson media outlets can be sickening at times.

The bar scene would be.

But lets be real. Take LSU out of BR and BR snuuuuucks. Plsu would still be pretty nice.

Agreed. I went to Oxford and was very underwhelmed.

I think Oxford is actually ok, but because you hear all this noise about how great it is, blah, blah, blah from the OM people you have this huge build up, and when you finally go there you're like "This is it?", "Really?". I think that's the disappointment with some on Oxford. Like I said it is nice, but it is nowhere close to the stories about it. Starkville is the opposite. I grew up an OM fan hearing how crappy it was. My older brother went there so I went a lot before I enrolled at MSU, and it wasn't nearly as bad as all the stories.

You know there are bars outside of downtown, and better restaurants too.

The only downtown restaurant worth a shite is Tsunami.

It would be a slightly more boring city, yes, but there's a lot of industry and a strong middle class here.

And news flash: if you took the college out of any other town/city on this list, they'd be a 1 stoplight rathole, save Nashville.

Nashville is badass.

I do like that we've spent the last decade trying to improve outdoors stuff and sports complexes here. The soccer park and awesome baseball facilities on Burbank, the velodrome, bmx track and remodeled BREC park in Kenilworth, and the golf course at U-club, among others.

They all provide a fun experience for football IMO. I have only been to Fayetteville, Oxford, Baton Rouge Lubbock. Lubbock was even fun although not SEC obviously. A good bar with cold beer is always a nice place to be if you don't have to worry about driving especially!
