Of the ones I've visited I'd rate Athens and Fayetteville neck and neck. Both have plenty to offer. If you look beyond just college parties, Fayetteville and NWA win hands down with Crystal Bridges (basically the Walton's private art gallery) and all the outdoor activity in NWA.

Athens has a lot more going on than college parties. Come around during the summer when most of the college kids are gone and it's like the OT 10 in cut offs changed into a dinner dress. This place never has a down period, just personality swings (insert Herschel joke here).

Nashville is about as opposite of 'college town' as you can get.

It is really about what you value and your reasoning. If you are talking about coming in for a football weekend your answer may be different than if you were going to school there or if you were looking to move there with a family.

The "going to school" question is just too biased but the other 2 questions are more interesting.

1. University to City (how important is the Univ to the city it resides) - Athens was built around the University of Georgia and named after the Greek city as a center of learning and creativity. 10

2. Campus Proximity (is it central to the city)- It makes up the heart of the city. 10

3. Proximity to Downtown or Bars (Self explanatory) - The famed UGA Arch is literally across Broad street from all the UGA bars. 10

4. Proximity to Sports venues (yep) - All sports venues are on campus. Sanford Stadium is built into a natural valley in almost the geographic center of campus. 10

5. Drinking Laws (how restrictive or lax are they...10 is lax) - No open container downtown, but this is easily worked around if you just pour it into a solo cup. 9

6. Campus Architecture (is it pretty to look at) - Yes. And it's only getting prettier as all of the old 70's style buildings are demoed and replaced with newer, more classic style architecture. 8

7. Gameday Experience (Grove for Ole Miss, etc.) - Athens gameday is probably Top 5 in conference. 8.5

8. Downtown/Bar District (points off for distance between) - #1. Easily. 10

9. Eyesores near campus (10 means none, 1 means ghetto is near) - Some housing projects sit off campus, but they're not a total eye sore. Honestly not much about Athens looks bad. 8.5

10. Misc (things not listed...traditions etc.) - We are the kings of college music. 10

Athens.....

quote:

Need some sort of point system. Just spitballing here, but...here is my ranking system. 10 categories. 1-10 ranking, 100 is perfect.

1. University to City (how important is the Univ to the city it resides) The town has been built around UGA from the late 1700's... 10

2. Campus Proximity (is it central to the city) North Campus butts up against the main thoroughfare in town (Broad Street)...10

3. Proximity to Downtown or Bars (Self explanatory)Downtown bar area starts directly across the street from Old Campus on Broad street...10

4. Proximity to Sports venues (yep) Sanford Stadium is a lil closer to downtown & Stegeman Coliseum, McGill Tennis Center, Spec Towns Track, Foley Field, the Butts-Mehre practice facility are all located in the center of campus...10

5. Drinking Laws (how restrictive or lax are they...10 is lax) Hit or miss on gamedays, depending on the cop & how hot it is & how bad his arse is chapped from riding his bicycle. Solo cups are usually OK, open containers are a no-no...8

6. Campus Architecture (is it pretty to look at) North Campus is awesome & the newer buildings on S. campus look great. Lotta the buildings from the 70's & 80's are eyesores...8

7. Gameday Experience (Grove for Ole Miss, etc.) Great scene if you wanna party downtown, tailgates are spread out all over campus, tucked in every little available nook & cranny on campus, very little "parking lot tailgating" going on (minus the railroad lot)...9

8. Downtown/Bar District (points off for distance between) Over 100 bars in a 6-8 square block area...14

9. Eyesores near campus (10 means none, 1 means ghetto is near) There is some public housing that butts up against campus thats noticeable if you enter downtown Athens from the west...7

10. Misc (things not listed...traditions etc.) Lotta tradition, pageantry, history, things to do etc...9

Honest 95 (91 if I can't give #8 - 14 points)...

THIS.. I always laugh when this particular thread comes up.. of course everybody gives Athens the reach around, but then you get the surprises, like everybody's sudden love affair with Oxford and Fayetteville ( )

Of course everybody thinks their college town is great, otherwise I'm sure you wouldn't have attended school/graduated from there..

It really depends on what you think makes a college town great. Some people like small quaint towns in rural areas.. others like mid sized towns out in the suburbs and then there are even those that like bustling campuses right in the middle of large (relatively speaking) urban areas. The great thing is that we have all three in the SEC, and that's what makes all of our schools great.

Growing up in SC, if you want to stay in state and go to a big school your only options are CofC, USC and Clemson.. I'm from Charleston and wanted to get away (no to CofC) and I tend to favor urban areas because I get bored easily and I like options (no to Clemson).. so besides the fact that I've always been a Gamecock fan, USC was an obvious choice for me and I loved going to school there. Columbia is great if you're looking for the "college town" experience in an urban area that's not overwhelming.

I've been to Athens and Oxford.. both are great towns. Athens is quintessential.. but I could never go to UGA or Ole Miss. To small for my taste personally. Doesn't take away from them, just preference. The only SEC towns I could see myself spending 4 years in are Nashville, Columbia and Lexington.

FYI, my favorite college town is Ann Arbor. That place is magnificent. It's the ideal town in my eyes.. not too small or too big. Madison, WI is amazing as well..

1. University to City (how important is the Univ to the city it resides) - The city of Tuscaloosa was once the state capital, but UA is the primary reason Tuscaloosa isn't another Black Belt small town. This is definitely a 10.

2. Campus Proximity (is it central to the city)- The Alabama campus is in the heart of the city. This is a 10 as well.

3. Proximity to Downtown or Bars (Self explanatory) - This is where UA could be better. The Strip has lost its luster the last few year as a result of leases being ended for tenants. But this has led to a revitalization of Downtown. I'll give this a 7.

4. Proximity to Sports venues (yep) - All sports venues are on campus. Though it wouldn't be bad if they were all centrally located on campus. I'll give this a 7.

5. Drinking Laws (how restrictive or lax are they...10 is lax) - Open containers are fine on campus. The bar hours are a lot better than most. A solid 8 here.

6. Campus Architecture (is it pretty to look at) - Alabama is among the most picturesque campuses in the country. The Greek revival architecture is the predominant, and really only, theme. It's a 10.

7. Gameday Experience (Grove for Ole Miss, etc.) - Tuscaloosa is without a doubt a top five experience in the SEC. The Quad is very underrated.

8. Downtown/Bar District (points off for distance between) - This is improving and will move up the list every offseason this thread is done. So much is coming, or recently added, to Downtown. But for now, I'll give it a 7.

9. Eyesores near campus (10 means none, 1 means ghetto is near) - This is where everyone visiting gets hung up on Tuscaloosa. The major corridors into the city are routed through some unfortunate areas. Then central city and midtown are great. But the west and south sides are eyesores. They alone give this a 6.

10. Misc (things not listed...traditions etc.) - It's a typical college town. Not many reasons visit outside of
the University, bars, and athletics. There's a growing music scene, and several outdoor ventures to choose from. A decent 7 here IMO.

Overall Tuscaloosa has lot to offer, but parts of the city are always going to create negative views.

It’s impossible to rate the SEC towns/cities without separating them into groups.

You have places like Knoxville and Baton Rouge with metropolitan areas approaching 1,000,000 people, and you have Starkville and Oxford with around 20K.

Not even comparable.

Baton Rouge has a ton of potential, but underachieves because the town has grown further and further out. Downtown is growing, Spanish town, garden district, and Perkins overpass are great places. Once they develop that one mile dump between the North Gates and Downtown, it will be a really cool place.

I still rank it #1 based on Freds free drinks alone.

Athens is the best college town I've been to in the SEC. I've been many times but it was better in the 80's and 90's.

Oxford is Starkville with a town square and a few more boutiques

Nashville is a growing metropolis

Tuscaloosa is a nice town, kinda plain

Auburn it's ok, right size

Gainesville driven through it

Knoxville driven through it

Starkville If you're not a State fan on here you've probably never been.

Never been to the rest. I've missed on Baton Rouge

I've been to Fayetteville, Nashville, Lexington, columbia (sc), gainesville, Knoxville and live in Athens.

Athens and Fayetteville are my favorite of those I've been to.

Columbia and Lexington are my least favorite of those I've been to.

Gainesville is nicer than people give it credit for. Knoxville sucks but has the good natural scenery surrounding it.
