Wow, just when you think the pieces to the puzzle are all in place, something big happens to create chaos and the picture changes. Ouch!

So your AD promotes him for 1 year he wins 10 games and gets fired That's f'd up
Sounds like JLS sought the job, knowing it'd be a one year and done deal regardless of the amount off W's they get.
He's coming in as a general manager/over-seer, nothing more. Keeps the players happy, keeps the asst's happy, let's the AD continue on doing his job looking for a permanent hire, lets the AD evaluate a lot of coaches around the country, etc.....

This particular choice of an interim can be spun many ways, but at the end of the day IMO this whole domino affect started by Petrino will have set Arkansas back 3-5 years when all is said and done.
And FWIW, my bet is that they hire Skip Holtz.

This is who Arkansas picked to replace the indecent Petrino: It picked a guy who didn't have the decency to coach a single game after being hired by his alma mater. Jeff Long, the Arkansas athletics director, might be the single worst judge of character I've ever seen. I mean, this is the guy who hired Petrino from Atlanta in the middle of Petrino's first season as the Falcons head coach. And then to replace Petrino, Long first wanted the Seahawks' Pete Carroll, who left Southern California months before the NCAA could hammer USC with the harshest football sanctions since SMU got the death penalty in the 1980s.
At this point, I'm surprised Long didn't take the advice of every Twitter smartass out there and make Sean Payton the interim coach. It's not like Payton had anything else to do this fall, suspended as he is from coaching the New Orleans Saints.
Then again, maybe Long called Payton and got turned down. Or maybe Payton was going to be the next guy on Long's list after John L. Smith, assuming Smith turned it down. But then, there was no way Smith was going to turn this down. A job in the SEC? A shot at one special year, which could morph into the job on a permanent basis if Petrino's players/system make Smith look good enough?
John L. Smith was never going to turn down this job. Not out of loyalty to Weber State. Not even out of decency. Decency, John L. Smith? This is the same guy who left Louisville for Michigan State late in the 2002 season. How late? Well, it was like this. Louisville was playing Marshall in the GMAC Bowl when the news broke that Smith, coaching there on the sideline, had taken the Michigan State job. TV cameras showed Louisville players learning -- during the game -- that their coach had taken another job.
That's John L. Smith. As Weber State just learned, that will always be John L. Smith.
This is your new coach, Arkansas. Same as the old coach.
Only not as good.

Do you think we'll still be the best job available come December? You think it's, I don't know, remotely possible that Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, etc, etc could ALSO be looking for a new coach (for a variety of reasons)?
So you're going to have to accept the fact that we're NOT going to be the best program, most likely, come December.
In all actuality, we'll be trying to convince a new coach to sign up to coach a team that just lost the majority of its "studs." No more Tyler Wilson. No more Knile Davis. No more Cobi Hamilton. No more Chris Gragg. Etc, etc, etc.
So one of those awesome pitches that we had now, "We've got a loaded cupboard at the moment. Come in and manage us well enough to get a good bowl game and start working on recruiting." Yeah. that? It's gone. It's going to be more of a, "yeah, yeah - sure. we graduated a bunch of guys. we had some guys turn pro early. But I SWEAR, those unproven kids are SUPER good too. Believe me."
It's a completely different situation to be stepping into. Step in in April of 2012, as a decent head coach, and you'll most likely win over the fan base because of how good we currently are in the grand scheme of college football. After 2012? Replacing a lot of players? That coach better have thick skin because his first year isn't going to be pretty.
We were in an infinitely worse position to hire a good coach after Nutt. The cupboard was literally fricking empty. We have more money and a better national standing than we did at that time. Not all of those programs will be looking for coaches, and we still might have first pick because we will start looking earlier. Even if all of those programs were looking I can easily think of several great coaches that will still be left for us. We will be able to pay top dollar and we will get a good coach. Take your daily dose of Zoloft and chill the frick out with that bullshite. You probably have never been right on anything concerning our program before, so what make you think you will be this time???

I've been trying to decide how I feel about hiring JLS as Interim Head Coach then I saw how much it pissed off that little weasel Gregg Doyle.....now I'm ALL IN (sorry Aubies).

I like the hire.
Best possible hire for 1 season.
Props to Long, leave the current staff in tact for a season then go find your guy.
Smartest thing he could have done. McGee wasn't going to come for 10 months after getting a HC gig at UAB. So it was either promote a current member of the staff with zero HC experience, or leave the staff alone and bring in a former member of the same staff that has HC experience.
Ready for August!

I agree UltimateHog, he will retire after this year with a nice buttload of cash. Then in December we'll find THE guy.

Was Gruden just the smokescreen to get Smith from Weber State before the Big Boys like Texas, Notre Dame came and offered him the goldmine?

Have they brought this guy in to steer the ship until Gruden can break away from ESPN? WTF?

Ultimate you do realize how bad this is going to hurt recruiting right?
