I think you are right. Before NIL kids were willing to put up with Saban because it would get them to the league and a payday. Now these kids are getting paid with NIL. Saban will have to adjust to dealing with kids that are getting paid or he will run. It’s why he ran from the Dolphins-grown men, who made much more money than him were not going to put up with him.

I agree 100%. The difference for me is the lack of mailers on the offensive and defensive lines. Saban needsto recruit his type of players not recruiting stars.

Without Bryce, you are looking at a 4 loss bama team

UGA is the new top program in the SEC. Ironically, Kirby did it by following the blueprint of old bama teams - physical, run the ball and play tough “make their arse quit” defense. Saban’s teams don’t look like that anymore

I don’t fully disagree with everything but does one point make that much of a difference?

It took two absolute magical environments and inspired quality opponents to knock Bama in the final play of each game. Is that really that bad?

This type of logic works both ways. Alabama was very fortunate to escape the Texas and aTm games this year without losses. They were very fortunate against Auburn last year as well. I don't think it's necessarily time to go full doomer for Bama fans just yet, but there is clearly something missing from the program that used to be there and I don't think it's just having incompetent coordinators (although that certainly doesn't help).

I mean until recruiting really takes a hit I don't really see it just yet. A Few adjustments in the off season they'll be right back in the thick of things. Unless the talent they're bringing in has been miss evaluated I think it has to do more with his staff.

Could it be an NIL thing?

I do think this has something to do with it, but I don't think it is some "the table has been leveled, Bama can't compete in this new world" ridiculousness. Bama is still bodying everyone else on the recruiting trail. I think NIL has made Saban less interested in his job. We already know he didn't like coaching in the NFL because he didn't like dealing with professionals and their attitudes. But now, with NIL, half the players on his college team are professionals. He just seems less invested overall.

Do think a lot of it is that Kirby Smart is recruiting better players away from Bama? You have to give Kirby credit that Ga team is far ahead of the rest of the SEC. Bama hasn’t looked good all season for the talent level on that team.

big clue that something is not quite right is how hard Bama had to go to the portal.

These days I’m not sure every program is going to have to deal with the portal. Additions and subtractions.

I agree. The most disappointing since the Bear quit 40 years ago.

So who do you think your next coach will be? Jimbo?

it isn't just that the players have changed. The entire demeanor of the program seems different.

NIL and the transfer portal have done a lot to turn college football into minor league NFL. Along with that come the arrogance, the attitudes, and the selfish behavior of young men full of more testosterone than wisdom.

Saban left the NFL because there was no way to exert any control or to direct of a bunch of youthful millionaires who were peaking early in life. On a college campus he could mold those young men into the players he needed to accomplish the goal of regular championships.

Whether for better or worse remains to be seen, but times have changed and so has the game. I won't say that the game has left Saban behind, but the discipline shown by this team on the field and the number of penalties incurred is indicative of a team that doesn't respect its coach. It's not that Saban doesn't deserve or earn that respect, but too much leeway has been given college players whose physical prowess is peaking long before their mental attributes have fully matured and they don't want to think that an old "boomer" can teach them anything about the game.

The obvious lack of discipline on the Alabama team will soon become apparent throughout the league in college athletics. It's just that it's easy to see it first on a Saban led team that has long been renowned for discipline and attention to detail.

2 loses in away night games by single digits is not bad - it’s just not what you’re used to. I would just enjoy having a chance to win every game - alot of teams have games they have no chance in.

The program is currently on a pretty clear downward trajectory. He's got this offseason to fix it in terms of staff, but I'm not sure he thinks the defensive coaching is an issue, incredibly. We'll find out I guess. BoB is going to be gone, though, at least.

But it's more than that. The program isn't tough anymore, isn't disciplined and isn't built around faceless men who perform like robots. He talks about mental pressures and anxiety, talks about how hard the kids are working and how bad they want to win, discusses personal value, etc etc. I dunno if it's the age thing or the NIL thing or what, but the entire structure of the program has changed and the results are pretty clearly showing that the change was negative. I'm not sure he has the ability to get that back at this point in his career.

^^That is it right there. Kirby has hurt Saban immensely by diluting the talent he has access to. There's a difference between having the number 1 class and no one having talent that is even close to you and having a number 2 class but talent is spread out more. Also, Kirby is reaping the benefits of those mega star classes right now - the ones that were insane even by Saban standards. Those classes aren't just helping Kirby and UGA but also hurting Saban and BAMA.

The rest of us were never getting most of those guys anyway. It's not hurting us as much because Saban had already taken them away from us.

Saban, otoh, is feeling the difference between a omfg class and 'just' an elite class. The question is will he adjust/does he even want to adjust? The recruiting game has changed with NIL and with Kirby pulling in guys BAMA would normally get. Coaching and recruiting will have to change to fit that if he wants to keep BAMA at an elite level.

Brutal honesty from the NY Post

quote:

Alabama won’t even sniff the playoff this year, with two conference losses in the same season for just the second time since 2011.

quote:

the most disappointing season of Nick Saban’s dominance in TuscaLucy

and the coup de gràce:

quote:

Really, Alabama is fortunate it only has two losses. It was outplayed by mediocre Texas, sans starting quarterback Quinn Ewers in a narrow road win. It nearly lost at home to three-win Texas A&M. That high-scoring loss at Tennessee doesn’t look as good after the Volunteers were manhandled by Georgia on Saturday. Had Alabama escaped LSU, and somehow run the table to earn a trip to the SEC title game, it would’ve only been setting itself up to get destroyed by the far better and deeper Bulldogs.
