Pretty sure there is data for this.

Just finish in the top 10% of your massive high school in any dump in Texas and you’re in.

As a dad of two kids in high school in North Texas and my best friend is a high school counselor in North Texas, Texas is very hard to get into nowadays and has for a while. It’s more like 3%. They just posted the top 10 students for my daughter’s high school. It was 70% Ivy League and then 3 to Texas.
My daughters drill team has 3 girls going to UT CAD program which means they didn’t get in but can go to another UT state school and reapply in a year.
Forbes listed Florida and Texas as one of the “New Ivys” that have very high standards now. Even if you get into Texas and your top 3% it’s a whole other ball game to try to get into McCombs business school.
My buddy who is a counselor says everyone applies to Texas and A&M, and they are all fall back on Arkansas and Oklahoma because they all get accepted there. That’s why so many kids from Colin county are at those two schools.

Doesn't texas have like 50K students? And nobody can get in there?
It has been massive for a long time and it hasn’t really grown because if you haven’t checked, it’s in the middle of a major metro area and they are landlocked. That’s part of the reason why they are so selective.
That’s also why A&M has grown so much because they have room for days to grow and are almost at 80,000 kids

Texas has had 50K students since my older sister was going there back in the early 70s. Always been hard to get into and always getting harder.
my freshman class was about 50K in 1978. Always been like that.
Hey Texas GRAD, your math doesn't math.

I might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, and I certainly can't understand what you're talking about. What math? Older sister attended in early 70s, I started in 78. We had 50K students back then. What you talking about Willis?
Whose math don't math?

If you drill down a bit some of the degrees offered at A&M and Texas a super/competitive, Just because you get admitted definitely does not guarantee you admission to business, engineering, etc. that’s where things really get separated.

A&M is raising requirements this year because currently College Station & A&M's infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the growth.

I think for regular admission to certain engineering disciplines it is highly competitive. That gives kids two options
1) Do the CAP program and come in your sophomore year with many of the business or engineering programs still locked out for you.
2) Discover a love of poetry or elementary school education and enroll in the less selective schools.
I have family with kids at one of the better private schools in Dallas. They graduate 100 kids a year and 23 of them are going to Texas this year, with a lot of that group falling back to the in state option because they did not get into the Princetons and Stanfords of the world.
If a kid is set on being a Longhorn, there are many paths to that.

This is not correct. McCombs is firmly in the Top 10 undergraduate business schools along with Indiana Kelley and a few others like UNC.
Owens is a fine undergraduate institution but McCombs has been a leader in many sub disciplines like accounting for decades

I've never been impressed with selective admission statistics. It plays a role in the overall prestige of the university, and a degree from what is perceived as a prestigious school may help you gain entry to better positions. My son, for example, got interviews to top east coast law firms because he graduated from Vanderbilt. That's a real thing.
But you can get a fine education at any SEC school and still qualify for admission to the most prestigious grad or professional schools in the country.
I'm more impressed with schools see it as part of their mission to provide quality educations to wider sections of their state populations.
