college football.

WASHINGTON -- Everyone from President Barack Obama on down to fans has criticized how college football determines its top team. Now senators are getting off the sidelines to examine antitrust issues involving the Bowl Champion Series.
The current system "leaves nearly half of all the teams in college football at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to qualifying for the millions of dollars paid out every year," the Senate Judiciary's subcommittee on antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights said in a statement Wednesday announcing the hearings.
Under the BCS, some conferences get automatic bids to participate in series, while others do not.
Obama and some members of Congress favor a playoff-type system to determine the national champion. The BCS features a championship game between the two top teams in the BCS standings, based on two polls and six computer ratings.
Behind the push for the hearings is the subcommittee's top Republican, Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah. People there were furious that Utah was bypassed for the national championship despite going undefeated in the regular season.
The title game pitted No. 1 Florida (12-1) against No. 2 Oklahoma (12-1); Florida won 24-14 and claimed the title.
The subcommittee's statement said Hatch would introduce legislation "to rectify this situation." No details were offered and Hatch's office declined to provide any.
Hatch said in a statement that the BCS system "has proven itself to be inadequate, not only for those of us who are fans of college football, but for anyone who believes that competition and fair play should have a role in collegiate sports."
In the House, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the top Republican on the Energy and Commerce Committee, has sponsored legislation that would prevent the NCAA from calling a football game a "national championship" unless the game culminates from a playoff system.

Doesn't Washington have a few better things to handle than college football?
i honestly don't care either way about a playoff vs BCS... but what the hell is our President doing wasting time worrying with the BCS?

See I'm torn on this. I HATE government intrusion into anything as a personal rule of thumb. But I also HATE the way college football is currently set up.
Personally, I would love to see an 8 team playoff and still keep the other bowl games intact (non BCS ones). If they did an 8 team playoff, they could still have the 4 major cities host games, and alternate the championship game ever year. The city that gets the championship could also host the "Final 4 teams".
Either way though, I don't see it happening any time soon.

quote:The NCAA doesn't officially recognize a D-1 FBS "national champion" and the official title for the 1 vs 2 game is the BCS Championship Game, so that one is just blowing hot air.

Maybe Corrine Brown, the "Go Gata" lady will speak on behalf of the SEC.

The thing in reality is this; Let's say we have an 8 team playoff..and let's say the final two are Washington and Iowa (Just sayin) This would be a financial disaster to the TV Sponsors who pay the big Bucks
How many Fans are going to really get into this game? It would be a joke.
I think The Prez should concentrate on more important things then trying to socialize College Football.

What gets me about the situation is that many if not most of the national sports media that have railed against the BCS through the years aren't even big college football fans. People like Mike Greenberg from Mike and Mike in the morning. He openly admits that college football is like his 5th favorite sport and says many weekends in the Fall he doesn't even watch. You have many others like this as well..... It's become a soap box issue for many in the media that really shouldn't be driving the debate at all.
ETA: Wilbon and Kornheiser are two more prime examples (not to pick on ESPN).

I agree we need a playoff to determine a true champion (like everyone else) but I disagree with the government involvement. Stay the frick out please.

But that's precisely the reason a playoff is needed. Even UW and Iowa beat the USC's, LSU's, Alabama's and Ohio State's to get there, then they deserve it. But to your point, they wouldn't be in the game under the current system if Iowa has the same record as USC at the end of the year. USC would go above them due to their national prominence.
It should be played out on the field. May the best team win. Even if that team happens to be South Dakota St.

I would agree, but where do you read he's wasting time worrying about it? The article is probably referencing his comments made during the campaign. I seriously doubt he's giving any thought now.

If Bama would have just stepped up and won the damn Sugar Bowl it wouldn't have been as big of a deal this year.

Your Point well taken. As stated; The corporate sponsors however see this as a possible financial disaster.
If say One team in the NCG is well known and has a huge fan base etc and the other contestant is a virtual nobody..then the sponsors see the one with the big fan base..carrying the game in viewership.
If Two Nobodys make it to the final two your going to have a lot of squaking from the Sponsors..that's my point...

i'm at work. didn't really read the article. my math was simply Alahunter linking an article +
Obama's name in it +
officials talking about changing the BCS around =
enough to ask "why in the heck is obama wasting his time on this?"

As a whole we have yet to derive a system or a formula to identify a true champion for the highest level of amateur American football. There have been many articles written by different sources detailing their own college football playoff format. I have yet to find one that fits into the current structure of our regular and post season as it is now. I myself have toyed with different scenarios along with different numbers of participants. This is my proposal. Not only does it fit into the current structure of the college football season, but it also does not disrupt the current bowl alignment.

The one exception is that ANY team that is not in one of the top 6 conferences that finishes the season undefeated will be an automatic at large team. An undefeated team may not have defeated more than one non FBS school during their season
There are two things that people will complain about in that system.
1. It lets smaller teams like Utah or BYU schedule very easy schedules just to become undefeated and fight for automatic bids.
2. It allows a conference champion in even if they don't deserve it because the conference as a whole is weak. (ACC and Big East)
