I think this rule might get Malik Willis redshirted

So a freshman can now play in up to four games and retain his redshirt? If so, that's very interesting. I suppose we will now get to see a lot more freshman play at the end of lopsided games.

Nice. Gives us time to try out Connor Noland early before committing.

Depends on if there is a number of plays limit.

That would defeat the purpose. I think if I was Gus I would make Willis the backup in the big games, gatewood the back up in expected wins and pretty sure Stidham will play at least 3 complete. It would make the QB battle more equal in 2019 for Willis vs Gatewood

Is this all encompassing, as in 4 games period? For instance, based on these new rules, a guy like Shea Patterson would have been granted a redshirt in 2016 when he started the last 3 games of the season. I think the rule would make more sense if there was a cutoff date or didn't allow a player to play in conference games, etc.

This should help a lot kids get on the field early on... I could see coach keeping one of the four games till end of the season if they are redshirt a good player.. Only thing that suck is if they get hurt in one of the four games.

They cant rely on the schools to do that and report, would have to have an NCAA official over that (or a ton of people per game to track every play a player is in). Makes it a nightmare, much easier to just use pure participation in a game or not.

Think about if they set that to 200 plays in a season, then you think you hit 199 in the middle of a game for a season and have to take that player out, etc...

Games just makes way more sense.

Did they specify if it has to be the first 4 games or can it be any four games?

Means we can play Kereon Joyner in blowouts against teams like Coastal Carolina without having to burn the redshirt. Good rule by the NCAA for once.

Or we could use him as a trick gadget player when it counts against Clemson, UGA, UF, and Kentucky...right?

That would be a record keeping nightmare for the NCAA to try to maintain.

Actually makes that 85 limit more like 95 now. The young kids should be fired up now even at Bama....since Bama doesn't play freshmen..........Aight
