Not really. Bama had still won a NC 15 years before Saban got there and had won the SEC 8 years earlier. That's not exactly distant past, it's shitty for Bama to go that long, but pretty much any other program would take that

Saban is a tremendous coach but he cant turn water into wine. The man needs grapes and Akron and Toledo are not the best vinyards.

Neither was Sparty, apparently.

There’s evidence to the contrary. Bama didn’t make Saban. Sorry.

Bama most definitely made him the GOAT

You're absolutely right. Numerous factors play into the type of success we're seeing at UA right now. It's not a coincidence they've experienced extreme success in Tuscaloosa on various occasions.

Depends 100% on whether or not Akron or Toledo have their own versions of the REC willing to do/spend literally whatever it takes to procure the very best players in the country every year.

He would make them like UCF or Boise State. Like blowing out their crappy conference and beating big names in NY6 games. Not winning titles with a G5 bc that’s literally impossible.

He turned L7U around. Toledo would be a snap.

All of the truly great programs have hit lulls. Some have hit many.

When Saban took over at Alabama in 2007, our last NC was in 1992. That's not bad considering some of the long hangovers other programs have had. I'm not saying Alabama was in "dynasty" shape when Saban got there, not by any stretch, but one of the reasons Saban came to Alabama is because Alabama is Alabama. People say it was the money, but the man was making money at Miami and would make it anywhere he would go. Alabama is a special place and Saban knew that. He's turned it around and now Saban and Alabama are now the unquestioned, unrivaled greatest.

I'm not trying to rub anything in. I think Alabama's accomplishments speak for themselves, both prior to and after Saban.

The real question is, could he have done the same at Nebraska, Texas or Notre Dame?

Maybe. I mean, it's possible, but we will never know because he came to Alabama. Every program has it's own challenges, and some coaches are better fits at others. Saban and Alabama was apparently the perfect storm.

Alabama had many internal issues when Saban arrived and he was the right man for the job. Saban was both willing and allowed to clean house and take total control. Alabama had too many hands in the cookie jar.

Depends. Does he get to take these advantages with him?

The question I’ve got is could Saban take a Vanderbilt and do it, take a program that has clear hurdles and make them dominant. I don’t think so, but it would be interesting to see.

I'd like to see this tested for real. It could be a quiet little retirement job for Saban. The interesting part is we have seen that a very good coach can win 9 at Vandy. So how much farther could Saban go than Franklin?

At this point, does he have so much clout that he could assemble a staff anywhere, recruit anyone he wants, and dominate?

No, don't be dumb.

He probably could have won his second or third NC at LSU by 2007.

No Alabama in the West he would have won more here.

Alabama gave him a National brand, but he had the talent in Louisiana to build a dynasty.

Possibly, but doubtful for a number of reasons like flexibility of the administration AND alumni assn. (egos), school entrance requirements, location and population acceptance of college athletics, etc.
The ONE thing we do know is that we'll NEVER know for sure.

Nick is a Bear Bryant discple... Favorite player ever was Joe Namath who came from not too far Beaver Falls Pa similar town ..12 was Nick's number - Namath s number...bama job was his dream job as a young man...but wisely keeps all this on the down low so as not to get trapped in past or in the shadow of Bear..

Not saying he was a bad coach but it took a second coach to win a Natty to get them over the hump from good to top tier.

What?? Bobby won 2 NC's and finished 2nd two other times and finished in the top 4 from 1987 to 1999...he's one of the greatest CFB coaches of the modern era.

Pell built the program and Steve rode it the rest of the way to the top

Huh?Pell was SEVEN years removed when Spurrier took over and the program was a shite storm with Galen Hall and NCAA issues...

IMO There are only a few programs that he could have turned into a dynasty like he has bama. USC, ND, Texas, OU, OSU and possibly Michigan and I'm still not 100% convinced that it would be the machine bama is.

I doubt ND and Texas would work...academics @ ND and too many egos to deal with in Austin. My guess is that Oklahoma would be his best shot....maybe USC with the Big-10s next.
