Dad died 7 years ago. Mom died a couple of weeks ago. We all go through it at some point, but it’s hitting hard tonight.
Was living in Singapore when my dad died, and it was sudden. Last day I spent with him was a trip home a few months before. We sat and watched SEC football all…damn…day.
Mom had cancer. Last day, it was just her and me until I called 911, with her crying out about the pain. Having your mom clutch you and say she just wants to die is a thing I wouldn’t wish on a Clinton.
Haven’t had time to let it hit since it hit. Tonight, it’s the first weekend at home with nothing to do since then. Mrs. Zwin out for the weekend, and I’m being a whiny butt by myself.
All that being said, let’s circle back to that last day with my dad. Tell me your best story about family and SEC football.
I’ll hang up and listen.

My dad died two years ago, on the way home from my baby sisters wedding.
He was a pessimistic Bama fan but never missed a snap. He and I watched us lose to louisiana tech live in 1999. I was just a youngster and it was one of the first handful of games I went to. We didn’t have a lot of money, but my uncle had season tickets and would give them to us for the “bad” games. We were SEC champions that season and lost to Tom Brady and Michigan in overtime in the orange bowl. Beat Florida twice that year back in their Goliath days.
One thing I specifically recall about that game was having hope right up until the clock hit 0:00. Dad wanted to leave when tech scored the go ahead touchdown in the final minutes. I wanted to watch the kickoff return. I knew we’d pull it out. We didn’t, but it was still the most magical season I could recall at that point in my life (couldn’t remember ‘92). Despite the loss, it’s a fond memory. I sure miss watching ball with my dad. He thought Mac Jones would be better than Tua when Mac was a third stringer. I thought he was crazy. Turns out he was right.

I’m an orphan too.
Love the family that’s around you.
SEC football is nothing.
Family is everything.
I have a good one and that’s why I’m still here.

Took my dad to Baton Rouge for an LSU game a few years ago. He had a degenerative nerve disease, so it was hard for him to walk. We were playing Mississippi State and my seats, at the time, were at the top of the lower bowl. We stopped to let him rest in some empty seats. Eventually, a group of State fans showed up and we were in their seats. Instead of making my father keep walking up, two of the guys in their group took my tickets and let us stay there. Had a great time with those State fans and have always respected their fans ever since.
Turns out, my father passed away three months later. He was only 60, so I'm glad I got one more game in with him.

I’m so sorry about your loss
My favorite SEC memory with my dad is actually a little weird choice for a UGA fan.
I rode down to the Auburn game in 2013 with my dad. Sat through the whole game and were right there when Murray dove at the goal line to move ahead of Auburn.
Obviously, we all know what happened next with the Prayer in Jordan-Hare.
We walked out of that stadium hopped right into the car and went straight to CFA before we ran for the state-line. We ended just sitting in the car eating, talking about life, football, and anything else we could think about. Probably hung out in the car talking for 2 hours just sitting outside the CFA.
Even though the game sucked, that night has stuck with me since as one of the first times my dad and I bonded as “adults”. Ever since then we’ve made sure to not let the results of the games get to us and just enjoy the time we get to spend together watching our favorite sport.
He had a really freaky health scare a few weeks back and I don’t know what I’ll do without him. Once again, I’m so sorry for your losses.

Until I moved to Singapore, I lived at Barker Cypress and 290.
I live in Upper Southern Canada now. If I was still there, I’d be all over that, even with your misguided school choice . Thanks.
(I actually went to Texas for grad school, but I usually have to know you better to admit that.)

Terribly sorry for your loss and everything your mother had to endure. At least you were there with her, as difficult as it might have been to experience.
I don't even know what else to say. Just hope you find peace and the pain eases up.
I lost my dad a few years ago. I'm in my early 30s and I still get mad knowing he was taken way too soon. Furious. That's the worst part about life is knowing people we love will eventually leave us. My dad was a fresh off the car tire raft Cuban so he never cared for football. But he did love baseball and worshipped the Braves. I'd kill just to "play catch" with him one last time...

Sorry about your mom, man. That’s tough. I’m lucky enough to have mine, but she’s 82 and really starting to slow down. Dad died 35 years ago at 47 and I still miss him.
Just remember the good times and hang on to those memories. They’ll sustain you.
EDIT: Forgot the SEC football-related. I have some old photos of me and dad sitting on the couch with a big bowl of popcorn watching the Bear Bryant show on Sunday afternoons.

You will always have their memory. That is one thing that death can not destroy.I lost my parents and while the hurt never truly goes away, we can only accept it and move on, knowing they are at peace. Prayers to you and your loved ones.

Well at least you got the graduate school right.. that has to count for something..
Since we can’t get a beer, i’ll give you a good movie to watch.
Whiplash - If you haven’t seen it, watch it. If you don’t like it, well then you can hate me. It’s really good though.

I feel you man. Lost my mom 17 years ago to a brain aneurysm. Still hurts and always will.
My dad and I are like the scene in City Slickers. We've always had sports. Gone thru times when we wouldn't talk to each other about much else. I remember going to Tiger Stadium with him when I was only 6 or 7. Called him from Omaha after LSU walked it off in 2000. Called him again in 2020 outside the Dome after seeing Burrow walk on water. But my favorite memory is after Paw Paw's funeral coming home to watch pigs fly over Tuscaloosa in '93.
Cherish the moments. It hurts because of the love you had for one another.

you are good people. tell the rest of your fan base to grow up, and learn to be a better poster like yourself.
we may not kick you out with mizzou if you do this, and promise to keep the dildos in the b12, and don't make any poop swastikas.

Sorry man. I know it's tough.
IMHO, the most exciting game in SEC history was the Arkansas/Ole Miss 7 OT. Eli Manning started for Ole Miss. Zac Clark started for Arkansas, but Matt Jones finished. There had never been a game like that before. It was like watching 2 games back to back.

Hang in there brother. I've found that everyone in life deals with this stuff at some point or other. It's part of living.
Our job is to just feel it -- as shitty as it may be. It's much better than a drink or chemical to make it seem like it disappears.
You are doing the right thing in reaching out. Prayers for you and yours, my friend.

My Mom died two years ago this November. She lived with me the last three years of her life. On Saturdays she would pretend to like football for me. She would just stare at the screen. If I got mad, she'd say, "What happened??" If I got happy and shouted, she say, "What happened??" Cracks me up every time I think about it. Your healing will come, my friend. Grief will come in waves and at inexplicable times. But your healing WILL come

Bit of a hangover. Gotta go see a customer this morning on a job site and then on to watch some games (B1G, unfortunately) with buddies. Good to get out and stop letting this turn me into Debbie Downer.
The stories above are exactly what I was looking for. Yankees and hipsters ridicule the idea that sports are a cultural thing, but the bonding that happens is real. I love that last memory of my dad.
Thanks for checking in.
