The NCAA Division I Council has banned college football teams from using former players in practice and tabled a proposal to let players participate in four games while still redshirting.

This is something Alabama has done before. UA and Clemson are specifically mentioned in the brief article, but I'm sure other schools have, as well.

Alabama has drawn attention for using former players such as Trent Richardson and Blake Sims on scout teams in recent years. Last year, Clemson had former Tigers quarterback Tajh Boyd mimic Alabama’s Jalen Hurts in practice to prepare for a playoff game against the Crimson Tide.

I don't see the problem with letting them on the scout teams sometimes. Alumni are invited back into classrooms to lecture or answer questions all the time. I've even done it myself.

So they're just banned from active participation? But nothing can stop them from coming back for a visit and just so happening to help coach up a current player on the side?

But those alumni brought back to lecture classrooms - there could be BOTH non-athletic students and student-athletes benefiting from them, right? Whoever is sitting in the classroom.

Do former FB players coming back to practice benefit BOTH non-athletic students and student-athletes in the same fashion? Are non-athletic students at Alabama and Clemson practicing with the teams when these former players are back practicing as well?

definitely an advantage for schools who have more recent grads who are NFL or near NFL quality.

I thought former Clemson players were too busy robbing former teammates to even attempt this any more.

I definitely think former players not being on the scout team is a good move. I think the current redshirt rules are dumb though. I think a RS should be able to see some limited action near the end of a season

Yes, actually. Scout teams are populated with walk-ons who are not on athletic scholarship.

I think you've made a mistake. Those walk-on students practice with the team, wear uniforms and pads that the team wears, stand on the sidelines for home games and often appear in games on special teams, or in mop-up situations. Their names are listed on the official rosters right besides those blue-chip, 5* scholarship studs.

They are football players. Everyone else other than you refer to them as student-athletes. Non-scholarship student-athletes, but student-athletes just the same.

I'm talking about the dudes, like the ones in the school band, or the ones in the fraternities, or the ones - both female and male - who NEVER suit up in a uniform and participate in sports, but go to classes at a university and work towards their degree. Do they get to practice with the team?

Because a MBB or CFB player on scholarship COULD major in that course and take that class and learn from that alumni that's giving his/her lecture in that class.....

I think it also does even more to allow a player that is injured early in the season not to have to go through the waiver process for a medical redhsirt.

Saban will work around this by bringing back guys who DIDN'T play football to run the scout team.

Reminds me of the "Saban Rule" ie the "Lazy Coaches Rule." Where Saban was outworking and recruiting in the Spring but the lazy head coaches that were too lazy to recruit in the Spring but didn't want Saban to either. So they made a rule to hinder Saban and aid their laziness at the same time.

There's not one valid reason a head coach can't go to schools and recruit in the Spring while assistants still can.

They put in a rule that is retarded, then dismissed the one rule proposal that made some sense.

Never change, NCAA.

By the way, the Washington Post is fake news. You should be ashamed of yourself for reading it.

I have no issue with former players coming back and helping the mental side of the game with current players; however they should not be allowed to suit up and practice.

On the redshirt issue, I would have no qualms with the bowl game not counting towards using eligibility.

Shouldn’t really be a problem for USCjr based on how many they put in the NFL last year. Here’s a list of USCjr players taken in last years draft:

Here’s also the list of players from USCjr invited to the combine:

Would be a great change. No sense in a player losing eligibility because he had to come in for 1 or 2 games because another player got injured.

Quite the opposite of you check FGF. Usually half of the threads regard the so called “taters”. As well, there is usually a Clemson thread or two on the rant at all times. No, I don’t want to be in the sec, I just enjoy reading the board

Also, I’m not Tillman glad we can clear that up, have a good evening.

So you frequent that Gamecock board as well, huh? Thanks for further proving my point regarding y'alls obsession with us. I never visit any of y'alls sites. Ever.
