Lying to the NCAA about something there was proof of was why Tennessee had to fire him. He got a show cause and that would have cratered the program.
Bingo!...it wasn't an option.
And UT has regretted it ever since. Lying was stupid, but he lied about having a BBQ. UT could have slapped him on the wrist and moved forward. It is not like he hired or tried to hire a wife beater.

He was hit with a show cause and so was his entire staff. Tennessee did not have a choice.
If he had been retained he would not have been allowed to coach or recruit for three years and would have had to hire an entire new staff.
Instead during that 3 year period Tennessee won 65 games and made a Sweet 16.
In the 6 years he’s been back in the league Tennessee has had a higher KenPom rank than Pearl every year except this year.
I don’t think Tennessee regrets it. They literally had no choice because Pearl and Forbes covered up and lied about a minor violation.
Not to say Bruce isn’t a great coach but the program is in much better shape now and has been much better over the past 10 years than it would have been if Tennessee had tried to keep a coach who was banned from the sport for 3 years.
Both schools appear to be recruiting at or in good shape to recruit an elite level in the 20 and 21 classes as well.

The former coach of the Tennessee Volunteers received a three-year show-cause penalty (which expired on August 23, 2014) for lying to the NCAA about an impermissible visit by prospective recruit Aaron Craft (who eventually went to Ohio State) to Pearl's home. While this was only a minor violation, the NCAA felt Pearl's lies elevated it to a major one. Had Pearl coached during this period, he would have been banned from taking part in most recruiting activities. Each of his assistants received one-year show-cause orders.[1] Pearl was hired as head coach at Auburn in March 2014—the first known instance of a coach being hired at a power conference school after serving a show-cause. During the July 2014 recruiting period, he was allowed to evaluate players but was barred from contact with them.[9]
They could have hired a coach to recruit aND weathered the storm easily. At the end they would have still had Bruce Pearl and only takes one recruiting cycle to get the program back to where they were. Look at UK,they do it every year.
UT caved under the pressure for some of the arrogant UT Boosters and the SEC Office. It was a mistake, but we appreciate you doing it.

Tennessee would have likely faced postseason sanctions, scholarship reductions and a Pearl suspension if they tried to keep him coaching during a 3 year show cause. Certainly not worth it especially when you consider that Tennessee has been better than Pearl in KenPom every year since that show cause was issued and the current program trajectories are very similar when it comes to recruiting classes and projected future classes.

Do you really think that Auburn wouldn't do the same thing if the same thing comes down while he's at Auburn?
