Yes it was, that dude needs to leave town.
Look at our last 3 coaching hires. We have been a dumpster fire for a decade. The last person we needed to hire was someone with baggage from Sandusky (proven or not proven. Briles anyone?)
Not to mention the guy was hated at Tampa and is a known a-hole.
Curry and Haslam are the villans in all of this. I dgaf about Schiano.

I'm sure there will be a lot of passing the blame around on this one but couple of UT Officials saying tonight that driving force behind GREG SCHIANO was VOLS mega booster and Browns owner Jimmy Haslam...He previously interviewed him w/Browns & supposedly pushed hard for him..

Good, honest post.
A word that should be banned from all Tennessee vernacular and the main reason for the fallout. UT did not get ahead of them and by failing to do so created an epic PR disaster. You HAVE to get ahead of the PR. By failing to do so they set the fanbase up bigly and set back the program even further. And shame on Gruden for letting them get so out of hand.

Tee Martin will be to UT what Mike Shula was to Alabama. Sometimes when shite is out of control you need to just bring in a clean young face that everyone loves and allow him a few years to settle everything down and then go for a big name. That place is on fire right now. It will take someone like a Gruden to tell that family to frick off.

I'm down with Tee. I'd rather suck with one of our own handling things than roll with a Butch clone that has the taint of PSU. PLus, we all know damn well Tee can recruit.

There are some good and valid comments in this thread. But I’ll add a few thoughts.
Schiano actually could have been just what UT needed, not wanted (they think the top big names should be begging to coach there: not true folks, sorry), but really needed. It took him a few years but he changed Rutgers (Rutgers!) around after a few years of hard work. He is a good coach. He could have cleaned up the football program.
Schiano mostly likely really didn’t have any knowledge of the Sandusky horror. It was hearsay of another person telling a story with his name which he said under oath was not true. The level of investigation was unprecedented and no one thought there was an anything to do with this guy. This entire debacle may have absolutely ruined this guy’s professional career. He made it through Rutgers and OSU. Imagine how his family is feeling. Seriously. This wasn’t handled correctly by UT, but the fan reaction that basically puts this guy right up there with Sandusky is crowd mentality at its worst.
Heaven help whomever eventually takes the UT job.

Post from another thread:
quote:
All true and good defenses in a court of law where you need to meet a high standard.
However, if you are making a hire to be the face of your program you do not need to meet the same standard.
McQuery was the star witness for prosecution of Sandusky. His testimony was weighed as one of the most daming aspects that lead to convictions beyond Sandusky.
The timeline: John Doe 101 , in the deposition, claimed that several staff and coaches walked in while he was in the shower with Sandusky --roughly 88-90.
Others victims said he did this as well before (police reports from the 80's.) And he continued this same practice at least until the mid 90s (specifically in the shower room.)
Now McQuery relayed what he was told by someone else. Someone who said Schiano had seen events that we now know were actually occurring in this time frame at the very specific location mentioned in the deposition of one of the victims. BTW these showers were for coaches and were locked and not available to non-staff.
McQuery did this under oath. If he did not know who the names were, why risk perjury?
Finally, the Sandusky Story broke in 2011 and Schiano was asked if he knew about Sandusky and allegations of child abuse. He said he did not want to "get into all that" and would not comment.
He only tweeted a denial after his name was released in 2016 when the depositions were made public.
None of that would be enough to convict a man. But it sure would be enough not to hire him.

Fans shouldn’t “gain back control” of the program. There’s a reason the inmates do not run the asylum. Fans are too reactionary to make rational decisions.
This event will negatively impact Tennessee for a long time.

Fair, but I think I would rather have actual inmates from a mental asylum run the program than the Haslams.

we're kidding ourselves if we don't admit a significant part of the backlash is due to our being underwhelmed with the hire.
Am I the only one who thinks Schino would be a decent hire? Dude turned around one of the worst programs in the nation at Rutgers. He could do well at UT.

Even if Schiano didn't have the bad pedo coverup baggage, he's a real a-hole, not even a good fit for UT, and a fairly high risk hire.
Rolling the dice with someone like Tee Martin, DJ Durkin or Mike Norvell would be a better hire.

And because of this y'all are about to hire less qualified coach when it comes to football than the AD picked. The backlash didn't fix the problem.
What is really happening is the last gasp of a dying program. The after death bowel movement happens when y'all hire a Tee that doesn't deserve to be a Sunbelt head coach.

UT is now under the control of an internet troll whose ego has been blasted through the roof. Enjoy the monster you've created Vols.

I’ll say this. I was terrible disappointed when we hired Chiz. Like threatened to stop supporting AU. He won a title, and hired Gus. Put AU on a run that has been fun to watch the last 10 years. Sometimes the fans don’t know best.
